Cynic

Another product of the prolific Florida death metal scene, Cynic distinguished themselves for their unique experiments in combining technically proficient death metal with progressive rock touches, bordering at times on jazz fusion. Cynic was formed in 1987 by vocalist/guitarist Paul Masvidal, guitarist Jason Gobel, bassist Mark Van Erp, and drummer Sean Reinert. With the arrival of bassist Tony Choy, the band began recording their first demos, which, for the most part, contained the prevalent death metal/thrash tendencies typical of the Florida scene. Then, in 1991, the band went on temporary hiatus while Masvidal and Reinert performed on Death's Human album and Choy departed to join Atheist. A year later, they reconvened with new bassist Sean Malone and signed with Roadrunner records, who described them as "the most famous underground band yet to record an album." This they finally did with 1993's classic Focus, a groundbreaking release in the field of progressive thrash. Besides the band's unquestionable technical prowess, the album also displayed their awesome talent for improvisation and inventive songwriting. Singer Tony Teengarden (who had contributed some vocals to the album) was brought on board for a European tour with Pestilence, but this was cut short when the latter broke up. Cynic, too, would decide to go their separate ways shortly after returning home to Florida.

The band eventually reunited in 2006, announcing a handful of tour dates and, eventually, a new album. Fifteen years after the release of their debut, the band delivered their long-awaited sophomore effort, Traced in Air, in 2008, an album that found the band moving away from death metal towards a more traditionally progressive sound. Two EPs, Re-Traced and Carbon Based Anatomy, arrived in 2010, and their third full-length effort, Kindly Bent to Free Us, followed in 2014. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi

I was a big fan of Cynic in the early 90s and the bands they served as session musicians for. Death and Pestilence never sounded the same after their contribution s . They were way ahead of their time. So glad to see them back and continuing the progression.

...Does anyone actually understand what angel of anarchy is saying? Cuz I'm confused...

Whatever. Cynic is amazing. Very progressive and interesting. Metal for the intellectual s . BTBAM is another great band, and has a more metalcore sound, kind of like Progressive Metalcore, which is great because I like metalcore's sound, but sadly most of the bands in that genre tend to copy each other... But yeah. BTBAM is more progressive than metalcore.

Cynic, BTBAM, and Opeth all play the same genre: Progressive Death Metal. That said, they don't sound alike. They don't have to though. The tag "Progressive " just means they're ahead of the trends in modern music. Cynic, Opeth, and BTBAM all fit that description. I love all of those bands.
Report as inappropriate
Sorry, but BTBAM is not that similar to Cynic at all. More like Death and Atheist (understanda b l e , given band member similarities ) . Hell, Opeth is more similar to Cynic than BtBaM. Don't get me wrong though, I love both of them. Cynic is ridiculous. Masvidal is a genius.

BTBAM metalcore... . wow. apparently that kid has no idea what metalcore is.. BTBAM is progressive metal, same genre as cynic. they are very similar musically, vocally very different. Cynic is awesome live :D

Between The Buried and me get lumped in with the contemporary crap metalcore bands, probably because of their name, but they're actually pretty damn talented and invented.

That said, I don't particularly like any of their songs.
Report as inappropriate
dty, how is BTBAM Metalcore? Have you even listened to any of their songs? When I saw the show, BTBAM was amazing, I went to see them. Scale the Summit was awesome too, they impressed me. Cynic was okay, I kinda like them. If anyone at that show sucked, it was Devin. He cracked some unfunny jokes, then played some crappy songs. BTBAM is insane. I don't see why you think you can't like BTBAM and Cynic. I do, but BTBAM is way better. They aren't Metalcore at all.
Report as inappropriate
I wouldn't care if they were touring with Miley Cyrus; if Cynic AND Devin are on the ticket, I'd go. :)
Report as inappropriate
Don't forget Devin Townsend is on the bill for that show. Also, why do you like Between the Buried and Me if you like Cynic and Scale the Summit? BTBAM is a terrible, talentless band that's riding the metalcore bandwagon right now because it's the "cool" thing to do. I've seen them live twice, and felt a mix of boredom and wanting to take a knife to my eardrums to end the misery. That said, Cynic and Devin Townsend are well worth the price of a ticket.

A perfect clash of beauty and aggression in a galactic atmosphere.

I discovered Scale the Summit around the same time I discovered Cynic. Pandora doesn't have Scale the Summit on here but I encourage anyone that likes Cynic to take a look.
