Most closely associated with his 1972 Top Ten entry "Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues," singer/songwriter Danny O'Keefe was born and raised in Spokane, WA, beginning his performing career on the Minnesota coffeehouse circuit of the mid-'60s. Through Buffalo Springfield manager Charles Greene, he landed a telephone audition with Atlantic Records honcho Ahmet Ertegun, signing with the label's Cotillion imprint to issue his self-titled 1971 debut LP. The follow-up, 1972's O'Keefe, yielded his lone hit, "Good Time Charlie," later covered by Elvis Presley and many others. Although 1973's Breezy Stories failed to capitalize on the commercial success of its predecessor, it did generate two of O'Keefe's best-known compositions, "Magdalena" and "Angel Spread Your Wings" (covered by Leo Sayer and Judy Collins, respectively). Following 1975's So Long Harry Truman, he jumped to Warner Bros. to issue 1977's American Roulette. Around this time, O'Keefe played a series of charity concerts for environmental causes, with his efforts culminating two decades later with the formation of his Songbird Foundation, a group dedicated to the protection of songbirds harmed by aggressive coffee-growing practices in Latin America. In 1984, he also founded his own record label, Coldwater, to release The Day to Day; Runnin' From the Devil, his first new studio album in well over a decade, appeared in early 2000. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi
Mark Anthony Wallis: I spoken with Danny via e-mail. He's planning on more concerts coming up 2012. Stay tuned, check his website and his Facebook page.
To ALL of you who still listen to Danny: he's still one of the best tunesmiths of our generation. Born in Spokane, WA, he lives in Wenatchee - and still produces and tours. Check out his website (hell, you know how). Keep listening to Danny. He's still one of the best we've got - an American Heritage -and he's a superior musician. Don't get better'n Danny. Agreed?
Danny always exemplified the soundtrack of my life back in the day. I love many kinds of music from loreena McKennitt to Ry Cooder and eveything in between. I have yet to find a lyricist that can compare to Danny O'Keefe and never pass up an oportunity to see him perform which he is doing more and more. For all of us, in the words of Mr. D, may you be forever young.
Danny is the best. We traveled from Tucson to Pt. Townsend just to see his show and to meet him. 'Blonde hair on my pillow, lipstick on my shirt'. Who else could come up with lyrics like that? I listen to American Roulette at least once a week. What a talented songwriter and good guy.
All of you below are correct: brilliant, gifted, very soulful voice - and a great instrumentalist. O'Keefe has such a wide range of life-experiences he draws from, and performs all his stories, so, so well! It does my heart good to know there are others of you out there still listening and enjoying his work. I agree with what REITZ10 says, though, and Pandora should include a whole lot more of his terrific stuff. C'mon, guys - beef it up!
Danny O'Keefe has an amazing, brilliant mind. He is the penultimate storyteller. The last album I bought was "Redux." I went to see him every time he came to town. I wore his records out two and three times over. Please, please, please....tour again?
