Dark Tranquillity

Toward the end of the '90s, Scandinavian death metal -- or at least one branch of it -- began to evolve into a more accessible amalgamation of death metal intensity, a bit of progressive metal experimentation, and more traditional late-'70s/early-'80s British metal, with its catchy, groove-oriented riffs and twin-guitar lead lines. Although the style was hardly confined to one place, there was an especially fertile scene centered in the Swedish city of Gothenburg, and Dark Tranquillity were one of its most prominent practitioners. Formed in 1989, Dark Tranquillity honed their chops for a few years and debuted on record in 1993 with the album Skydancer; their lineup consisted of vocalist Anders Freiden, guitarists Niklas Sundin and Mikael Stanne, bassist Martin Hendriksson, and drummer Anders Jivarp. The band shuffled its membership for the 1995 follow-up EP Of Chaos and Eternal Night; upon Freiden's departure, Stanne took over lead vocals, and was replaced on guitar by Fredrik Johansson. This lineup remained intact for the full-length The Gallery issued later that year, which helped begin to build an international fan base.

Follow-ups Enter Suicidal Angels (an EP) and the full-length The Mind's I appeared in 1997, marking a tightening of the group's sound into a more compact attack; in 1999, Dark Tranquillity departed the Osmose label in favor of a deal with Century Media, which was consummated with the release of the more goth-flavored Projector later that year. Electronics manipulator Martin Brändström subsequently joined the group as an official member and guitarist Johansson departed; bassist Hendriksson took over for him on guitar, and his spot was in turn filled by Michael Niklasson. Haven was released in mid-2000, continuing the less traditional approach of its predecessor. Afterwards, the band would continue moving in a heavier direction with 2002's Damage Done and 2005's Character, which found the band getting more atmospheric and aggressive. In 2007 they decided to split the difference between the old and the new, bringing back Stanne's melodic vocals but retaining the heavier sound for the album Fiction. In 2010, Dark Tranquillity released We Are the Void, followed in 2013 by their tenth studio album, Construct. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi

The most rock & metal stations on Pandora Radio!
Man; 19 years old, Freshman and Sophomore year of college I found these guys on Pandora. Thank you, Dark Tranquillity , for writing Endless Feed, the music to which the horrible room-mates of my young adult life were forced to bang and loudly do drugs while I was trying to study and/or bang and loudly do drugs myself. Nothing drowned out mid 2000's hip-hop better. :D
MISBEHAVEN! No I'm Haven! Cool name for an album. BEHAVEN now!? My name is now album material from a cool heavy metal band. f**king awesome man.

Agalloch is an amazing metal band from the states...
Don't forget lamb of god and god forbid!
I heartily agree with the words of jason_mrbl
but for the record, IN FLAMES was and is the best melo-death band of all time.
not much coming out of america these days that is worth a squirt of piss compared to the european scene. exceptions would be the mighty dream theater of course, symphony x, and kamelot. much of america metalcore is just too much of the same...and not melodic or creative enough to be memorable.
jason_mrbl
How can you guys say American metal sucks???? We have Nile, Origin, The Faceless, All Shall Perish, Dying Fetus, and a crap load of other great bands.
Ministry look for tunes from here...
Thee glowing feel of metal
I'm so glad I found dark tranquility

@IHATEURFAVO R I T E B A N D . . . f**k you. And it's melo-death, the melo standing for melodic death metal, you idiot. How dare you call In Flames, Amon Amarth, Scar Symmetry, Children of Bodom, and Kalmah un-metal! You stupid poser, go listen to your assking alexandria.
Mello-death? LMAO all these tags are un-metal as F***!
ernestoaulet
Notable American metal exceptions: Lamb of God & Machine Head
My Dark Tranquillity TzT
Best Melo-Death band ever. Studio and live performances are amazing!
freimuth.bra d
i completely agree, american metal is nothing compared to european metal. They are much more musically inclined and its at least understandab l e compared to most modern american death metal bands that just throw s**t together
For the most part europe owns the metal scene now period. Yea there is some good metal here in the states, but the bands here are old and soggy bar bands compared to the development of metal in the E.U.
D.T. rocks BTW
bill dunn is just a troll
Why the f*ck does it have to be about the fact that European metal is better than American metal! Jesus Christ! Can't we just all agree to rock the f**k out!!!!!!!!! ! !
@hotrodd
what would you expect? metal originated in europe to begin with
