Dave Weckl Band

Dave Weckl is one of fusion's most acclaimed drummers, making his name during a six-year-stint with Chick Corea. Weckl was born in St. Louis and grew up listening to soul and jazz; he received his first drum set at age eight and developed his playing by listening to drummers like Buddy Rich, as well as R&B grooves. He majored in jazz at the University of Bridgeport, but left after two years to become involved in the New York jazz scene, also touring Europe with various bands. Weckl joined a fusion group called Nitesprite, where he attracted the attention of drummer Peter Erskine; Erskine helped him get a gig with French Toast, a band also featuring pianist Michel Camilo and bassist Anthony Jackson.

From French Toast, Weckl branched out into session work, playing on numerous early-'80s sessions with the likes of Bill Connors (Return to Forever), the Brecker Brothers, Tânia Maria, Paquito D'Rivera, Eliane Elias, and George Benson, as well as pop and soul albums for Diana Ross, Madonna, and Robert Plant. In 1986, Chick Corea saw Weckl performing in New York with guitarist Connors and invited the drummer to join his new Elektric Band. Weckl spent a total of seven years with Corea, performing on numerous albums and also appearing with Corea's Akoustic Band; his skills received considerable esteem, and he augmented his work with Corea by continuing his session work and appearing often with the GRP All-Star Big Band. Weckl also released a series of instructional videos, and in 1990 he led his first solo date, with Master Plan for GRP. Heads Up followed in 1992, as well as Hard-Wired in 1994.

Upon leaving Corea, Weckl's primary focus was recording and touring with guitarist Mike Stern; he also continued his work as a sideman. In 1998, Weckl led the R&B-oriented date Rhythm of the Soul, a return to his other boyhood musical love, and the like-minded Synergy followed in 1999. The Dave Weckl Band had really gelled by the time of Transition's 2000 release, but Weckl didn't leave teaching behind, either, and released another instructional recording, The Zone, in 2001. After working extensively with a quartet for the last few years, he debuted their efforts with 2002's improv-heavy Perpetual Motion. Multiplicity followed three years later. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi

As a bass player, the only bass player albums I own are Jaco's. It is other musicians instruments that I like even better. Dave is the best by far. He has studied the mechanicals of drumming which apply different to each drummer. he has mastered the technique. It is the choice of notes that truly marks a master. Dave has impeccable choices in his playing. I could listen all day to his stuff.

I saw Dave with Oz Noy and Anthony Jackson about 6 months ago in the city. Weckl looks the same as that picture taken I don't know how long ago. Love Dave and his style, but not too many people can compare to Vinnie Colaiuta. Sorry....... . . . . . .

Dave sounds Awesome on Chain Reaction, so much fun to listen to. He's definitely one of the most exciting drummers I've ever heard play. And that's up against all the best. Wackerman, Bozio, all the best guys, he stands out.

I first saw Weckl when he was still at UB. He blew me away even then. If you want to see really old Weckl, look for Night Sprite on YouTube.

An old friend of mine was DW's roommate at Bridgeport. My friend was a respectable jazz drummer but said that DW was in a league of his own as a teenager.

Drummers, guitar players, keyboards... . e t c . Every player is as unique as his or her fingerprint. Everyone draws from there own experience and influences. There are those not as technically skilled but still have something interesting to say. You going to like what appeals to you from your own experience and influences. I guess what I'm saying is either it's all good or it's all bad.

a percussionis t greatest attribute is to accentuate the tune... not going to who is best but Weckl does that very well... I as a drummer am not a fan of a 17 minute drum solo
Report as inappropriate
yeah sure Weckl's a great drummer. But I just can't get into this "sound" of jazz. It's the same way I can't appreciate all those guitar "shredders". Music first, virtuosity, technicality much later....thi s is more musicicans music, I just can't get into the feel at all...

Great drummer.

You guys keep mentioning "Neil Pert", I'm guessing you're talking about Rush's drummer - it's Neil PEART.

Hey Guys, Always remember Buddy Rich was playing these licks and fills, solos before these other drummers were in diapers. Doing drum battles with Max Roach and Gene Krupa. Weckl, Cobbham, Pert, etc learned from listening to Buddy, and then extending his ideas!! I
My best friend's dad played keyboards for Buddy's band, and I got to see Buddy up close and today leaves me wondering how did he do that?! He was a very brash man! Check out a Tribute to Buddy put togrther by Neil Pert!!

to Mr. Charles:

Buddy and Cobham were both great drummers, but Weckl is better. Honestly, Buddy and Cobham pretty much just had chops going for them, and neither had the feel or groove that Weckl does. And he's not the most amazing drumemr out there either. Look at guys like Marco Minneman, Virgil Donati, Terry Bozzio, and Thomas Lange if you want to see the most technically skilled drummers out there.

I started listening to him while with Chick and never stoped.

this is a good drummer. the comparison to Buddy Rich is to say the least very over rated..... Buddy Rich/ Blly Cobham ...thats it!!!!!! then another level down from these greats!!!!!! where do some of your critics come from AMG???

If you ever get the chance to see DW play live don't pass it up. I've been able to with Chick C., in drum clinics and last month with Mike Stern. Nothing short of amazing. Me, I'm not a drummer, just a huge fan of musicianship . Weckl will turn your head around.

Dave Weckl is one of the greatest drummers of all time. He plays with such soul and flawlessness . . . I really hope that is a word...LOL
