David Ball

David Ball was born in Rock Hill, SC, on July 9, 1953. The son of a Baptist minister father and musician mother, Ball started playing the ukulele as a young boy, but by age 12 had switched to guitar. After high school, he and hometown friends Walter Hyatt and Champ Hood moved to Nashville, where they scraped out a living as Uncle Walt's Band. The going was tough, and eventually the trio moved to Austin, TX, hoping to find greener pastures. There Ball and his friends matured as musicians, playing covers of popular folk and roots numbers, but also writing and performing their own compositions. Ball played bass, sang lead, and also contributed backup vocals. Uncle Walt's Band was a hit in Austin, where the music scene was more progressive and hungry young players like Lyle Lovett would pack the group's dancehall shows. The band released three successful albums before breaking up in 1983 as its members pursued solo careers.

Cut loose from Uncle Walt's Band, Ball returned to Nashville, where he gutted it out for most of the 1980s until landing a recording contract with Warner Bros. Success was quick. Thinkin' Problem, his 1994 release for the label, went double platinum and spawned three hit singles. The following year, Ball was nominated for a Male Vocalist of the Year Grammy. He returned in 1996 with Starlite Lounge, which continued to display his penchant for dressed-up honky tonk. While his 1999 effort, Play, was shellacked with a Music City sheen, Ball redeemed himself with the dust-caked traditional country of 2001's Amigo, and he kept to the traditional course with 2004's Freewheeler from Wildcatter Records and 2007's Heartaches by the Number from Shanachie Records. ~ Johnny Loftus

I should have said the name of the song in that last comment, Riding With Private Malone, if you didn't already guess.

My father, both of my grandfather' s , cousins aunts and uncles have been and are in the military. There was also a young Chief warrant officer from my hometown, I didn't know him personally, but his name was Andrew. He was 27 and had a wife and baby. His helicopter went down in Afghanistan in January 2014. This song makes me cry every time.

I LOVE riding with private Malone. It doesn't matter how many times I've heard it, it makes me cry every time!! My father in-law did 2 tours in Vietnam and I lived right next to air force base in Tokyo during Vietnam where my neighbors would be sent out and their wives would watch the planes leave and cry.

I have always adored him & his music since I first heard it. What has happened to this awesome singer?

This one really hurts to listen to. My brother is Private Samuel D. Malone..he left home about a year ago, and now he's in the army. He left for a girl. He has a chance if being deployed this year, and I'm just afraid he'll leave and never come back...God, please keep him safe...and bring him back to his family..

He and I were born on the same day in history...Ju l y 9th, 1953! We both love country music! I'd like to catch him in concert on our birthday in the Carolina's before we get to old to sing! I'd even be willing to play the drums and sing back up for him. That's what I do! My favorite song of his has just got to be Riding with Private Malone!

ah yes, real country unlike too much of current country music which amounts to people singing rock with a southern accent, a wall of guitars and unimaginativ e lyrics. Thank goodness for all the good country music that's been recorded over the years.

I guess I was wrong about N Carolina...T h a n k s for all of the other comments. It seems that we are all in agreeement. Too bad abuot the problem. I have always loved this artist and wondered why he never received the accolates he deserved. Their mistake doesn't help. My favorite song that he used to sing was As the crow flies. Anyone ever heard him sing that?

The bio is NOT about David Ball. I'm not an expert on him, I know that David Ball is from North Carolina and started out in a trio called Uncle Walt's Band with Walter Heitt, who died in a plane wreck. I think they met at North Texas University in Denton, TX (?). I heard him in Ft. Work in the very early '80 and he was playing upright Bass with Uncle Walt's Band. David Ball has always played country to my knowledge, expcept when he was a kid. His family was musical. He has a beautiful voice and
