David Olney

Though multi-instrumentalist David Olney is a folk singer at heart, he incorporates wide-ranging inspirations from honky tonk to rock into his standard repertoire. Born in Rhode Island, Olney moved to Nashville during the early '70s and became a major player in the city's underground folk/country scene. He gained a contract with the folk label Philo several years later. Though his first half-dozen albums were recorded before the end of the decade, Olney's output during the '80s slowed considerably. He returned to Philo in 1995 with High, Wide and Lonesome, recorded with an impressive cast of roots rock all-stars -- Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, Sneaky Pete Kleinow, Rodney Crowell, and Brian Ahern, among others. Real Lies followed in 1997, including contributions from John Prine and Garth Hudson, while 1999 brought Through a Glass Darkly. After a live album that year (Ghosts of the Wind), Olney recorded in 2000 for Dead Reckoning (Omar's Blues) and in 2003 for LoudHouse (The Wheel). ~ John Bush

Dave Olney and Sergio Web are a great duo to say the least, very good musicians, performers and song writers. Seen Davie many times over the years, he continues to improve year after year, like a fine wine. Really like My Lovely Assistant and the Migration album, super!

David Olney and the x-rays go yeah! Wish they could get back together for a show or two in nashville town?!

I met David his very first night in nashville in 1971 at a Jocks, the very day he and his best friend Steve Runkle (bless his soul) had decided to move here from South Carolina never heard him play till i heard him play at Bishops Pub in Nashville. Was he different than those i had heard there before? Well he was so much better that i followed him and even ended up working in a bar where he played regularly The Last Chance Saloon, loved it when he played I fell in love with what he had to say

I have followed David Olney since the 1970's when his band was known as the X-Rays...he packed 'em into small venues in and around Nashville. As he grew older, his considerable writing skills were evident. He is a poet, a writer, a philosopher and, of course, a baseball addict. He has written so many songs that I can't chose my "favorite" from week to week; it depends upon my state of mind, where I am constantly amazed, Dave has been there as well.

I saw this guy on a whim and consider it the best performance of the year! His lead player was also excellent!

"Now and forever" is very good by David Olney

"My Lovely Assistant" is image making at its best. A story and a message in three verses. That song alone would mark David Olney as a great song writer, but of course, there are many more great songs from him.
