David Peaston

David Peaston's inability to gain a foothold on the urban contemporary scene is one of the mysteries of the late '80s and early '90s. His huge, bombastic voice reflects great family roots; his mother Martha Bass was one of the Clara Ward Singers and a great gospel performer, while his sister Fontella Bass has equally distinguished gospel and soul credentials. He started out as a teacher and after being laid off in 1981, Peaston moved from St. Louis to New York. He began doing session work and auditioned for a role in the gospel musical Don't Get God Started. He also auditioned for a spot in the Apollo's famous Amateur Night competition. He became a featured attraction on the syndicated Showtime at the Apollo in 1988 and eventually landed a deal with Geffen. His 1989 LP Introducing...David Peaston was among that year's hottest and most soulful releases, and he also toured with Gladys Knight in America and Gerald Alston in England. Peaston moved to MCA for the 1991 release Mixed Emotions, but failed to get the vital crossover exposure or breakout urban hit he needed to get the recognition he deserved. ~ Ron Wynn, Rovi

I never post comments about anything. I do listen to more different kinds of music than anyone I have met. David had the best voice I have ever heard or might ever hear. I get chills and my hair stands on end when he sings and I didn't mention the tears of emotion that well up. A golden voice from God.

I was first introduced to the 'voice' of Mr. David Peaston while attending Syracuse University by a friend. The first song I heard from him was tonight. My first thought was what a voice from above. The next song was give peace to me tonight. When I hear his voice I am in a place of peace and harmony. Thank you Mr. David Peaston you will be truly missed and ALWAYS REMEMBERED!! ! I was absolutely devastated when I heard of David's passing this week. I followed his career after Showtime at the Apollo and didn't understand why he was so underrated. I loved his strong voice and his sweet personality. I know he's singing with the angels. My favorite was his rendition of Can I? Rest in peace, David. You will be missed.

One of my all time favorites. Back when love songs were love songs...
I will always remember Mr. Peaston, he was my twin son's teacher,(PS 184) my husband (at the time) saw him on the Apollo TV show and kept saying this guy could sing he looks so familiar but I cannot place him. Omc day we took our boys to school and my husband that is the guy from the Apollo. The rest is history-last time I saw him was at BAM for MLK day. Best to you Mr. Peaston, where ever you are.

Mr. Peaston has got to be one of the greatest male vocalist of all times... His seemingly effortless way of delivering a lyric is timeless.
There are many mysteries in life and Mr. Peaston seemingly not"making it" is one of them. The man can "blow". Has a big time voice. Great lp.
