David Sanborn

David Sanborn has been the most influential saxophonist on pop, R&B, and crossover players of the past 20 years. Most of his recordings have been in the dance music/R&B vein, although Sanborn is a capable jazz player. His greatest contributions to music have been his passionate sound (with its crying and squealing high notes) and his emotional interpretations of melodies which generally uplift any record he is on. Unlike his countless number of imitators, Sanborn is immediately recognizable within two notes. While growing up in St. Louis, Sanborn played with many Chicago blues greats (including Albert King) and became a skilled alto saxophonist despite battling polio in his youth. After important stints with Paul Butterfield (he played with the Butterfield Blues Band at Woodstock), Gil Evans, Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, and the Brecker Brothers, Sanborn began recording as a leader in the mid-'70s and he racked up a string of pop successes. Over the years he has worked with many pop players but he has made his biggest impact leading his own danceable bands. Occasionally Sanborn throws the music world a curve: his eccentric but rewarding Another Hand, a guest stint with avant-gardist Tim Berne on a 1993 album featuring the compositions of Julius Hemphill, and a set of ballads (Pearls) on which he is accompanied by a string orchestra arranged by Johnny Mandel. For a couple years in the early '90s, Sanborn was the host of the syndicated television series Night Music which had a very eclectic lineup of musicians (from Sonny Rollins and Sun Ra to James Taylor and heavy metal players), most of whom were given the unique opportunity to play together. It displayed David Sanborn's wide interest and musical curiosity even if many of his own recordings remain quite predictable. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

A genre unto himself. Unmistakable and always rewarding.
plays a very unmistake able sax
"Spooky," how freakin' AWESOME David Sanborn is!! Supercool Dude!
This Yanow guy is no good! He writes a nasty bio about any excellent musician--he is on some jealous trip, slashing anybody who has great talent. One victim was Lee Ritenour, but many fans rebeled against his criticism, expressing their disapproval against him. So, Pandora listened to the fans and decided to take Yanow out; now, Ritenour has a much nicer and more accurate bio written by another biographer. :-)
Very envious of all of you that have had the great opportunity to see him in person/conce r t / v e n u e . W i s h i'd of had the chance.Keep on playin' the way you do,David.... w a y COOOOOOOOL.. . .
Not to mention he was in the original Saturday Night Live band with Paul Shafer and Howard Shore. The new guys try to sound like him, but struggle. Every time I play his records my friends say that sounds like the Saturday Night Live show. Didn't know he was at Woodstock! I'm a huge fan.
Big fan here of David Sanborn. When I used to teach aerobics I used a lot of his music.

He was on the Smooth Jazz Cruise 2012 and just blew me away! He really is...AMAZING LIVE! He is ...the God-Father!
Backstreet is one of my favorite Sanborn albums. I've seen him many times in concert since the 80's and he remains my favorite sax man.
While Sanborn is generally regarded as a purveyor of cool jazz, his sound is always listenable and engaging. In fact he would likely prefer to not to be known as a cool jazz player …but I thinl the CJ sound was really an outgrowth of his unique musical vision. He has amazing chops and is as just as comfortable jamming with Marcus Miller as Kenny Garrett and James Brown.

WOW!! He was at Woodstock!!! f M e e e T o o o o !
I am so in love with his music, his music is like a rainbow in the bright sky! The flavor of his music sings to my heart, I am in flight when he plays for me! Go Sanborn!
David's music makes me smile every time. We all could use more smiles.
Saw him in concert, not only does he have talent, he has a very warm spirit! Fan for life!!

My husband introduced me to sounds of David Sanborn. Wow, he makes my soul sing.
Backstreet was my intro to David Sanborn. I feel in love with his music, and finally after almost 20 years, I am going to see him in concert this Sunday. I have great seats and am so excited. He is a awesome musician.

I studied saxophone with Joe and so did David.
I've been a huge fan of Mr. Sanborn since Backstreet, and was fortunate to have seen him once in FL in November 1986. He's never failed to give me chicken skin whenever I hear him wail away on the sax. Truly an original!!

David Sanborn is truly one of the most romantic jazz musicians of our time. I just love him!
David Sanborn put the " S " in the word Saxophone ! No doubt one of the top 5 sax players ever ............ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
shelgirl92
"Capable?" The greatest jazz sax artist of this century? "Capable?" This is the problem with critics. 40 years for Sanborn to perfect the use of the instrument above all others, and how long has Scott Yanow been in the business of throwing around opinion on the subject? Scott - you know nothing. Keep your opinions to yourself.
Long time favorite. Never get to see enough of him. Know his playing anytime, even when playing music like that from Another Hand. There is no one like him.

Fabulous dance music! I love him...
I want to second muzikluvah, it was the double vision album that introduced me to David Sanborn and I have been hooked since then. It amuses me when I hear imitators try to play like him. Sanborn has a unique tone that you can identify immediately.
He is one of my favorite saxaphonists . . . . h e i s really really good...and I enjoy listening to his music...
Sanborn has always been the man since high school, back when Michael & Randy Brecker were kickin it with him real good. When most kids were listening to Kool & The Gang, Earth Wind & Fire, and the Ohio Players, I had me some Sanborn. "73" & "74"

I've been in love with this cat ever since "Double Vision" w/Bob James. Somebody let me hear the cassette (yeah, it's THAT long ago!) and I haven't been the same since!

dubuque10 - I was at the blue note celebrating my birthday, too! I had about 8 friends with me and we were a few yards away, it was amazing - he's always superb. I've been a fan for years. I,too like ronaldmanuel 6 1 can distinguish his sound from others in the first few notes. I have a picture of David and myself backstage at the blue note which I cherish.

I have liked David Sanborn , sound for years now and still do
My favorite artist, I was a kid when my older brother would songs from hideaway, a change of heart. I loved his sound and always am able to distinguish when he is blowing. Love em still.

I've been a fan since I "discovered" Dave back in 1974. I was stationed at The Presidio of San Francisco. Nothing like listening to his music while crossing the Bay Bridge or driving through the downtown canyons on a quiet Sunday afternoon. Heard him play in Munich in '83 I believe, on a snowy winter evening. He had the audience mesmerized all night. He ended the concert with "The Dream"! He and Hiram Bullock were incredible. Needless to say, I'm still hooked.
Doesn't seem like I started listening to him 20 years ago with the Change of Heart CD. Awesome music. Tintin was my fave at that time
