DC Talk

The first gospel act to incorporate hip-hop influences (though the trio rarely departs from standard pop/rock), dc Talk became one of the most popular groups in Christian contemporary music during the mid-'90s, when their fourth album, Jesus Freak, made the highest debut for a gospel act on Billboard's album charts. Formed in Washington, D.C., during the late '80s, the group first comprised Toby McKeehan and Michael Tait. Adding Kevin Max Smith to the lineup soon after, the group added elements of hip-hop to their self-titled debut album, which appeared in 1988 on the ForeFront label. Neither McKeehan, Tait, nor Smith were comfortable playing instruments on their recordings, so each recorded only vocals by the time of 1991's Nu Thang. After the release of Free at Last just one year later, dc Talk concentrated on touring for several years, during which a change of image resulted in the group's resemblance to a grunge band. Indeed, 1995's Jesus Freak featured more raging guitars, though within the medium of harmonic pop/rock. Upon its release, Jesus Freak sold more copies than any gospel album in history and eventually moved over one million copies. Supernatural followed in 1998. ~ John Bush

Seriously? I like DC talk... but I have a station called Stryper Radio and the first 14,426 songs are Audio Adrenaline with Kevin Max from DC Talk, Then Toby Mac from DC Talk. Then, some actual DC Talk comes on, and wait...Tait. . . yes from DC Talk, then Newsboys...w i t h Tait... from DC Talk.... and so it goes. They act like breaking up was a bad thing, but they completely dominate the radio stations separately!

Well hey, at least they all got lead parts...

The three singers in this band: Toby McKeehan, who is now TobyMac, Michael Tait, who is now the lead vocal for Newsboys, and Kevin Max Smith, who is now the lead vocal for Audio Adrenaline.

Your song hat if I stumble. Found me in prison trying to die when I heard your song it found me and my bass. Brought me back to the church and since into a relationship with my savior and has placed me on praise teams and has allowed me to reconcile with the love of my life and my children. Thank you

If anyone likes TobyMac, well, this is where he came from. He was the lead vocal in this group. When the first DC Talk album was released, the rap genre wasn't so popular in the Christian community as it was in the secular world. DC Talk brought rap into Christian music and now we have Lecrae, KJ-52, R-Swift, Trip Lee, KB, NF, Je'kob, Capital Kings, Grits, and Group 1 Crew. If you like any of those, thank DC Talk.

The bio says that Dc talk was the first gospel act to incorporate hip hop influences, but truthfully, there were several others before DC Talk. Michael Peace, Stephen Wiley, PID just to name a few. These other groups never had the popularity of DC Talk though.
