The Gypsy-tinged quartet DeVotchKa were formed in Denver, CO by multi-instrumentalists Nick Urata (vocals, guitar, trumpet), Tom Hagerman (violin, accordion), Jeanie Schroder (sousaphone, bass), and percussionist Shawn King. Supporting musicians rotated in and out of the eclectic group's lineup, contributing such diverse sounds as strings and bazoukis. While some described DeVotchKa's sound as polka-rock or circus music, the band was actually a cross-pollination of numerous influences, including cabaret, spaghetti Westerns, and the immigrant dance music of Eastern Europe. Supermelodrama, their self-released 2000 debut, garnered numerous accolades, and the band toured in support of the record with such luminaries as Calexico, 16 Horsepower, Flogging Molly, and Archer Prewitt. Una Volta followed in May 2003. Issued by the Boulder, CO indie Cicero, DeVotchKa promoted the album through a tour with noted burlesque/fetish entertainer Dita Von Teese. Their solid third album, How It Ends, was released in 2004, followed by Curse Your Little Heart, an EP of covers that included Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Last Beat of My Heart" and the Velvet Underground's "Venus in Furs." In 2006, they composed the lush score for Little Miss Sunshine, earning a Grammy nomination for Best Soundtrack. In March of 2008, the band's most mature release, A Mad and Faithful Telling, hit the shelves, reaching the number nine slot on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. In 2011 the group released its sixth studio album, the moody and triumphant 100 Lovers. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi
I don't understand how the music these guys put out stir my emotions so powerfully. betwen this song and 'this place is haunted' - my heart rips apart.
I played violin with Tom in jr high/high school...he is a great violin player and DeVotchKa would not sound the same without him. Super proud to have once had the opportunity to play with him and share in his talents...I love these guys, waiting for a tour date in SD!!!!

Fell in love with these guys in 08. been following them since. my favorite pandora channel by far. cant wait to try and get to see them in concert soon. wonderful use of talent and artistic vision.
Mad, beautiful, eccentric, evocative. Somehow, some way, this sound captures my vibe, and maybe yours, too, if you're feeling as mad, beautiful, and desperately hopeful as we must be these days.
Some days Pandora gives me nothing but crap, but today it's nothing but a treasure trove. DeVotchaKa is tres magnifique, bueno, sugoi, or how many ever ways you can say good, awesome, epic in any other language.
I saw this band Saturday night at Lincoln Hall in Chicago and they were brilliant! DeVotchKa is, by far, my favorite band, and I am euphoric to have finally seen them live. :)
I love this music. The band is a refreshing talent in a time of artists conforming and creating the same old sound just trying to make $$$. This is true artistic integrity and talent.
This band can break my heart and make me feel certain of a better tomorrow, all in one song. I don't know how they do it but I hope the magic continues for many more beautiful years.
Just saw these guys this weekend at the Telluride Wine Festival in Colorado. They are just absolutely amazing musicians, and after ten years I still love them!
Where is Una Volta in the discography? Please Pandora! It's my favorite album!!!

I've seen this band 2 times now, once for Halloween at the Boulder Theater and once at the Paramount on Friday the 13th. Both time, the songs I love seem to sound even better live and I can't wait for their show at Red Rocks this summer!
I saw these wonderful musicians at Les Claypool's show at the Myth in Maplewood MN. I've never even heard of them, I went to see a hands down skilled bass player and was amazed by this band. It was a strange lineup but it was great. Also, a band called Secret Chiefs 3 was there. They were amazing as well. Not quite like this but if you have an ear for instrumental skill, check them out.

really enjoying them...all the great bands seem to come from colorado.
I saw DeVotchKa at the Tease-O-Rama, in.... i wanna say 2004? 2005? Perhaps i'm way off, it's been quite a while, but anyways, the Tease-O-Rama was great, eight plus hours of burlesque, Dita Von Teese, Miss Kitty from San Francisco, and so many others. The BEST part of the show? The intermissions where DeVotchKa played. I heard his voice and fell in love, and that's coming from a hard core Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails fan. :)
I first heard of this band after listening to the commentary on Little Miss Sunshine, when the director talks about the music's influence on the movie's soundtrack. They have some truly beautiful songs. Their lyrics are especially evocative.
i saw this band when i lived in san francisco and they opened for the Presidents of the United Stated of America and instantly found an appreciation for them, their live shows are where its at.
