The Diamonds

One of the leading cover groups of the mid-'50s, the Diamonds adapted current R&B hits into pop gold of their own. Hailing from Toronto, the Canadian quartet (consisting of Ted Kowalski, Phil Leavitt, Bill Reed, and Dave Somerville) signed with Mercury in 1955 and immediately zoomed up pop play lists with covers of the Teenagers' "Why Do Fools Fall in Love"; the Willows' "Church Bells May Ring"; and their biggest hit of all, a sanitized version of the Gladiolas hit "Little Darlin'." Fronted by David Somerville, the quartet hit with an original, the smooth dance outing "The Stroll." After weathering major personnel changes, the Diamonds notched their last hit in 1961. Somerville remained active as a solo artist for a time, and the Diamonds often toured the oldies scene. ~ Bill Dahl, Rovi

This is week is the one year anniversary of the loss of my dad, listening to The Diamonds radio on pandora, brings a huge smile to my face. Remembering listening to them on the record player growing up and daddy (and mommy) taking me to see them for my 10th bday and sitting stage front at the club in Bakersfield drinking shirley temples!

I am only 26 but I grew up listening to lots of music. Especially from the '50s my grandfather listened to almost all the artists from the time and I listen to them also. It drives my wife nuts.lol

Well, you have to be as old as me (67) to love these guys. They helped me to make love to my girl friends in the '60s.

Saw them not too long ago--no originals of course, although one happened to be in the audience. They put on a good show and covered a lot of other 50s groups.
