Diana Krall

With her pre-bop piano style, cool but sensual singing, and fortuitously photogenic looks, Diana Krall took the jazz world by storm in the late '90s. By the turn of the century she was firmly established as one of the biggest sellers in jazz. Her 1996 album All for You was a Nat King Cole tribute that showed the singer/pianist's roots, and since then she has stayed fairly close to that tradition-minded mode, with wildly successful results.

Krall got her musical education when she was growing up in Nanaimo, British Columbia, from the classical piano lessons she began at age four and in her high-school jazz band, but mostly from her father, a stride piano player with an extensive record collection. "I think Dad has every recording Fats Waller ever made," she said, "and I tried to learn them all."

Krall attended the Berklee College of Music on a music scholarship in the early '80s, then moved to Los Angeles, where she lived for three years before moving to Toronto. By 1990, she was based in New York, performing with a trio and singing. After releasing her first album on Justin Time Records, Krall was signed to GRP for her second, Only Trust Your Heart, and transferred to its Impulse! division for her third, the Nat King Cole Trio tribute album called All for You. Love Scenes followed in 1997, and in late 1998, she issued the seasonal Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.

When I Look in Your Eyes followed in 1999. Whatever renown Krall had earned over the years for her work exploded with this album, which became an international best-seller and earned her a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. It also was the first jazz album to be nominated for Album of the Year in 25 years. Krall's crossover success followed her as she performed in Lilith Fair the following year, and her songs cropped up everywhere from episodes of Sex in the City to films like Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. In 2001 she released The Look of Love, featuring charts by legendary arranger Claus Ogerman, best known for working with bossa nova innovator Antonio Carlos Jobim in the '60s. The album topped the Billboard charts and went quintuple platinum in Canada, the first by a Canadian jazz artist to do so. The Look of Love also helped Krall win three Junos in 2002, taking home awards for Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, and Best Vocal Jazz Album of the Year.

In 2003, Krall married iconic British rock musician Elvis Costello. A year later, she issued The Girl in the Other Room. Covering a few standards, this album also included original material -- some co-written by Costello -- for the first time in her career. Returning to the large ensemble standards approach of her previous album, Krall released From This Moment On in 2006. In 2009, she teamed once again with The Look of Love arranger Ogerman for the bossa nova-themed Quiet Nights; the album performed well, debuting at number three on the Billboard Top 200. Krall returned three years later with Glad Rag Doll, a collection of covers of tunes from the '20s and '30s produced by T-Bone Burnett. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi

I saw Diana about 2004 at Clowes Hall at Butler University about 2003-2004 it was a three hours and she made it seems like maybe a half hour that is just how quick it went.
Went to see Diana on Friday 04/12/13 at the Newark NJ PAC. All I can say is she was just fab and sometimes funny but the music was great. The show was over to early. I just love her.

Diana---What a face! What a voice! What an attitude! What a musician! What a sense of humor! What a naughty fantasy! What a lucky Elvis!
My all time favorite. She had me with her first CD...
Sultry Jazz vocals, and easy on the eyes too. She's a talented musician who plays piano and is married to Elvis Costello.
When I hear her sing Peel me a grape, I just want to be that grape.
after listing her on live in Rio i had take a cold shower
ever since seeing a live concert she can sing the phonebook and i'll feel gooooooooooo o d

I just want to see the Glad Rag Doll album cover.
That voice is sooo hauntingly bedroomie!!
Once I read the liner notes I realized why the new disc has such a great sound; it was produced by T-Bone Burnett. Highly recommended.

I am just amazed how beautiful and talented Diana Krall is. She transcends me to another time. Love Her.
It's true that she's no clown with a line of patter, but she has that very rare ability to really touch many people with her music. I have seen more than one person, myself included, get misty eyed when talking about her. Saw her live a couple of years ago and she and her trio were absolutely - pardon- Unforgetable .
Why are seemingly grown people so immature? What do her looks have to do with her singing? So what she's not 'warm and fuzzy' on stage. It's her music that's the message. So what she sings in Spanish with an accent! How many Spanish speakers speak English with an accent. My, how people love to hate.
I saw her for the second time in lancaster pa. It was a nice performance but almost the same material as the first time. I really enjoy her when she does versions of more contemporary songs. No matter. I am a dedicated fan. Luv her style.

Actually, Dave Frishberg composed Peel Me A Grape (both melody and lyrics) in 1962.
This is the music of my "father". Never listened to it until I heard Ms. Krall sing it. Now I'm hooked. I especially love her original song, "Peel me a grape", which she wrote with her mother & sister(s) playing around at the piano at home (if I remember the story correctly). I love it's sensual playfulness.
It’s so hard to “make it” in the jazz world, that I’m the last one to “diss” a fellow jazz musician/voc a l i s t . But Krall’s vocals just plain annoy me: Her phrasing, feeling, & tonality are just somehow “off” to my ears. Sounds forced & unnatural. I hate to be like the little boy in “The Emperor’s New Clothes”, since so many love her, but sobeit. I wouldn’t even write this, but was driven to it since Krall seems to creep into every one of my Pandora stations, & is constantly in my face.
her voice touch my heart , her look invade my feeling , i love her way to sing although many audience did not like her but as music lover considered her as one of the best of the market , she has a unique way to talk to your mind . she is not hip hop or classic musician but she is a mix between jazz and blues . love you
Somehow Krall's music creeps into all my jazz vocal radio stations on Pandora, & I always cringe when she comes on.. I finally figured out why I can't stand her: Her vocal style is FORCED, as opposed to natural. She TRIES to be suave, but the problem is that I can HEAR her TRYING & it's painful to listen to. Phrasing is off, tonal quality is lacking. Everybody has their opinion, & people have the right to like her, but she just rubs me the wrong way-- IMO, she should just stick to the piano.

A fine musician, no doubt. But not much of a showman. I saw her with Tony Bennett, and while he talked with the audience, developed rapport, and energized the crowd, Krall simply came out, played piano, sang her songs and walked off. A little disappointin g in that respect. Unless she's changed her live performance style, I'll stick to listening to her recordings, which I enjoy very much.
I just saw her .. she played in the palm springs valley .. I am so glad I could finally see her without driving a long distance .. she was totally comfortble on stage .. has a great back up band .. Being as i have been playing the piano for many yrs. , I went there to get inspiration and certainly did .. any negative comments on here about her proves there are actually people who dont have a clue what they are talking about . I always wanted to learn cry me a river thx for the inspiration dia

I just met Diana Krall and her family here in San Francisco by happenstance . I've been a fan for years and I'm even more impressed at what gracious, down-to-eart h people she and her husband are. They were in a public venue here with their children. No entourage, no assistants or nannies, though there was security present. It is incredible when someone so famous could be so unassuming and humble in public.

She just fell in love with the way he sings She. Surely that's all needs from him.

Ughh, just discovered she's married to that troll, Elvis Costello.... b e a u t y and the beast!
klvo_64
I'm a old man now but wow! I love her style. She's going to be performing in Palm Springs this August but I will be out of town. Go girl set the world a fire!
hey, I'm not bravocharlie --- must fix this, because I'm female.
I wish my musician-fat h e r could hear Diana now.
with her sensual voice, her style and beautiful intonations, she can sing in any language an still make you fall in love with her music. Comprendes tonto? Eu amo voce, Diana!
She's one of the very best smooth/mood jazz singers. Excuse her for being attractive and stylish. What does her appearance have to do with anything? And those who claim she's out of tune... really? Tony Bennett would disagree!
mjbarab
she should learn to speak Spanish before singing songs in that language. Horrible accent and boring.
andylange1
For all of you have seen her in concert recently, how was it? I saw her a few years ago in San Diego and she was much better in digital form than live. She really seemed uncomfortabl e on stage. Maybe it was just that night, but I haven't seen her since and I love her music.

Allot of people don't know she studied with Oscar Peterson, she is an amazing pianist, vocalist; as a pianist myself I think she is just amazing!

It's interesting reading some of the negative comments about Diana Krall. I personally love her music. I respect musicians and artists who has the courage and passion to express themselves through their music despite the public ridicule and criticism. Enjoy the music.
I admit it. My wife and I listen to Krall on lovely summer evenings. From there on, who knows?
sflores223
With her smooth sultry voice she can draw in any audience, with great simplicity and charm! ~~~~ slyjazzie
And let's not forget her piano playing!
What's with all the disrespect for Diana! She has a smooth, sultry, and husky voice. And woever said she's out of tune needs an ear adjustment!S u c h a pleasant option from all the big gigantic voices that everyone seems so enamored of. Not that I don't like the big voices but her music is quietly sensual and calming! I love her!
epfodes

Never heard of you. I watched her play with Clayton Hamilton...j a z z piano solo. Attended Berklee. That's pretty serious in my book. BTW. Know what consititues professional in an profession.. . . S a l e s
+ the picture on the FTMO CD is a bad one maybe she has been listening to Elvis Costello sing to much!
