As an Artist I love seeing songs about art :p I rank this in the top 3 best songs ever written....probably at number 2. Gordon Lightfoot's Ballad of the Yarmouth Castle is number 1....
I was very pleased to see these lyrics listed as a poem in a high school literature book. Great song. Great lyrics. Great poetry. Great God, I'm a mushy idiot!
Everyone measured McLean for America Pie, but this is the song that sold me on him. I love how this song touches the heart, how you can't help but feel.
Love this song! Always reminds me of warm, summer nights in New Jersey...staying out past dark...trying to catch lightning bugs, or running to the Dairy Queen, with my blue ball Panasonic radio on a chain by my side! :D
It makes no difference to me at all about its inspiration, that is great to know, but this song is a song that like many of Don McLean and America's songs, can not help but touch a "special place in your heart", if your heart is open to the melody, the lyrics and the ambiance that "paints" such a joyous, peaceful design on ones soul. If not, then sadly, your heart has probably been corrupted, poisoned by the wrongs in this "world". Close your eyes, open your heart an listen again and feel !
The poetic language of this song trumps any "limpness" that might be present with the song's melody and chord progression. I am jaded though. I have loved this song since I was a kid. I am not artistic enough to "get" Van Gogh like most, but I get this song!
I used to sing this song to my daughter as a lullabye, but I didn't know all of the words. I adjusted to that by singing what I did know repeatedly in a loop. One day she told me "I heard that song on the radio today, but they sang it wrong."
i love this song....i used to work with people with mental illnesses, and as vincent van gogh not only was a genius painter but struggled with mental illness his whole life my patients (esp my depressives and my schizophrenics) used to feel this song was just for them.
This song just doesn't work for me, maybe because I really don't like Van Gogh's paintings and so I'm not sure why anyone would be so inspired to write a song about him.
It's pretty but also feels limp, if that makes sense.
And Danny, Van Gogh is one of the most famous painters in the world. You've probably seen his painting "The Starry Night" all over the place.
Funny. Just seconds before this song came on, I was wondering if Don McLean ever did anything other then American Pie. American Pie may very well be the best song ever, by the way. P.S. Who is Vincent Van Gogh? Good song, whoever he is.
