The Doors

The Doors, one of the most influential and controversial rock bands of the 1960s, were formed in Los Angeles in 1965 by UCLA film students Ray Manzarek, keyboards, and Jim Morrison, vocals; with drummer John Densmore and guitarist Robby Krieger. The group never added a bass player, and their sound was dominated by Manzarek's electric organ work and Morrison's deep, sonorous voice, with which he sang and intoned his highly poetic lyrics. The group signed to Elektra Records in 1966 and released its first album, The Doors, featuring the hit "Light My Fire," in 1967.

Like "Light My Fire," the debut album was a massive hit, and endures as one of the most exciting, groundbreaking recordings of the psychedelic era. Blending blues, classical, Eastern music, and pop into sinister but beguiling melodies, the band sounded like no other. With his rich, chilling vocals and somber poetic visions, Morrison explored the depths of the darkest and most thrilling aspects of the psychedelic experience. Their first effort was so stellar, in fact, that the Doors were hard-pressed to match it, and although their next few albums contained a wealth of first-rate material, the group also began running up against the limitations of their recklessly disturbing visions. By their third album, they had exhausted their initial reservoir of compositions, and some of the tracks they hurriedly devised to meet public demand were clearly inferior to, and imitative of, their best early work.

On The Soft Parade, the group experimented with brass sections, with mixed results. Accused (without much merit) by much of the rock underground as pop sellouts, the group charged back hard with the final two albums they recorded with Morrison, on which they drew upon stone-cold blues for much of their inspiration, especially on 1971's L.A. Woman.

From the start, the Doors' focus was the charismatic Morrison, who proved increasingly unstable over the group's brief career. In 1969, Morrison was arrested for indecent exposure during a concert in Miami, an incident that nearly derailed the band. Nevertheless, the Doors managed to turn out a series of successful albums and singles through 1971, when, upon the completion of L.A. Woman, Morrison decamped for Paris. He died there, apparently of a drug overdose. The three surviving Doors tried to carry on without him, but ultimately disbanded. Yet the Doors' music and Morrison's legend continued to fascinate succeeding generations of rock fans: In the mid-'80s, Morrison was as big a star as he'd been in the mid-'60s, and Elektra has sold numerous quantities of the Doors' original albums plus reissues and releases of live material over the years, while publishers have flooded bookstores with Doors and Morrison biographies. In 1991, director Oliver Stone made The Doors, a feature film about the group starring Val Kilmer as Morrison. ~ William Ruhlmann & Richie Unterberger, Rovi

THE DOORS♥
What a perfect combination of music and lyrics. The words alone mesmorise me and the music just takes me to a whole new dimension... . !
My sister introduced me to their music. It doesn't really sound like anything else and I think that that is why it is so well loved. I agree with most of the other posters on here that if ikbong and Tommy Jackson don't like The Doors than don't listen to it. Quite a concept huh?
I love the Doors music. If Jim Morrison had blond hair he would look a little like Kurt Cobainl. Both guys were awesome.

To lkbong: go flush yourself down the toilet. The Doors are great!
To Tommy Jackson, you say they the Doors are over-rated? According to you? Ha!Technical l y a sizable number, called a majority, of rock fans voted & declared the Doors & Queen as stellar rock bands. The majority has spoken & your opinion, entitled a you are to one, fall by the wayside. That's democracy at work. So you can kick rocks.

I love the doors! People are Strange helped me get through high school and I bet some of my friends still hear it in their sleep 20 years later : )

Love it!!
People that don't like The Doors should listen to their first record, c'mon peopleThe End!
lkbong and Tommy Jackson can piss off!! Why are you even listening to the Doors if you don't like them?? Besides, you must be mentally damaged if you can't recognize the raw talent of bandmembers like Ray Manzarek and Jim Morrison!!
You can hear the influence of The Doors (as well as Jimi Hendrix and a host of blues/blues- r o c k artists) in Black Sabbath. It's pretty cool!
I think the Doors are criticized because they are so different and so melancholica l l y beautiful. They go deeper into your mind than most bands do today, they don't appeal to cliches, perfect example in The End, Jim Morrison describes the violent conclusion of an Oedipal Complex. Does any other band come close to approaching psychologica l topics like that?
if you dont like the doors why are you here listen to something else, why leave the comment , he was a rock icon if you dont like it leave
they look around the room stoned, twisted like they were just born. confused, cant make eye contact, do they feel like us or are we just confuseed
it was heart faliure b**ch . i drink for jim some one has to do it. a girl that think the doors are good, is my kind of girl

In 1993, I was driving down the Baja Peninsula, about 300 miles south of the border. It was probably 4 AM, not a good time to be driving in Mexico. I came around a bend and had to brake hard and swerve to avoid a body in the road and the wreckage of a truck. My buddy, in the passenger seat was sleeping and jostled awake by the cars sudden movements and squealing brakes. The first thing out of my mouth was Indians scattered on dawn's highway bleeding. It wasn't funny but it was.
And they continue to open minds. And they continue to push buttons. And they continue to make the listener question, everything. Taste and preference, timing in art. Thank you The Doors. I will continue to open and close, to fix and lock, and slide under whatever will fit when needed.

The Doors, rock.
everyone has their own tastes. obviously someone born in the 90s isn't going to like 60's music as much as someone born in the 60's.
All you amatuer rock critics probably cant even get a sound out of an harmonica. although you should be virtuosos with all the hot air coming out of your blow holes. anyone who has anything negative to say about zep or the doors is disqualified from commenting on any band from the 60s or 70s go fantasize over your marilyn manson posters
also in todays society, jim morrison may have been heavily medicated... oh wait he was.
sometimes a little strange, but have always liked the style and creativity.. . that's all im sayin
mmmmmm Manzarek.
I think everyone should listen to The Doors! It may be trippy but its amazing, and to all those people whom dont like The Doors, please give it a chance. Its really good. I bet all those people hating on The Doors listen to pop music. Or should I say the worst stuff on Earth! Seriosly people listen to quality music! NOT music that tells you to go out and party and be worth nothing your enitire life. At least rock and pycadelic rock is fun to listen to and its quality music!
ikbong, dont agree with you at all, but i do wish you well
Doors r great. Jim m. was a poet! .
just listen to the music
Just got out of the shower and love the doors
lkbong
We used to call them The Residual Turds s**t that just wouldn't flush. as a Viet Nam Era Vet. I had to put up with this crap from guys from Kansas who though this was the s**t. If you like this crap, wake up and smell yourselves, really????
lkbong
The world's most over rated band ever. OMG. when they were interested in being a band is with their debut album. Some Interesting stuff there. Their drummer always sounded like he was in need of his second lesson. So pretentious. As a musician back in the day when we listened to Spirit, Traffic,Towe r of Power, Stoneground, Sons, and other people of talent the Doors compared with Creedence. No down strokes, just s**t;
lkbong
Flush me two times????
Awesome!!
design1694
@chadcreight o n , you heard The Doors in the 80's? Are you sure your not thinking about The Cars or some other s**t? Jim dies in '71
bobonnit
twistedschis m , the Doors didn't perform rap so they couldn't be the worst band in the history of music. But you must also have a tin ear and no knowledge of music to make such a statement. Sure, the Doors released some clunker songs, but some genius was there too.
jdyounker
The Doors have been my favorite band since I was a kid. Not a single day goes by in my life where I don't thank god that people that talented live on this planet.
lovelovelove l o v e l o v e l o v e l o v e l o v e l o v e !
At his best, Morrison was one of the best blues stylist of his generation. At his worst, he was a pretentious a-hole. His best lyric writing is excellent.
Worst band in the history of music not to mention over rated and over credited for such simple, dry monotonous music
I heard the doors in the 80's when I was a kid and it scared me...as an adult I can understand why.
No one has ever come close to Jim Morrison! He was the ultimate rock god of his time.
