Down is an all-star heavy metal side project whose original lineup consisted of members from Pantera (singer Phil Anselmo), Corrosion of Conformity (guitarist Pepper Keenan), and Crowbar (guitarist Kirk Windstein, bassist Todd Strange, and drummer Jimmy Bower). Formed in the mid-'90s when Pantera was on a brief break (between their Far Beyond Driven and The Great Southern Trendkill releases), the quartet's members had been longtime friends and decided to break up their downtime (hence their name). The East/West label issued Down's 1995 debut, NOLA, an abbreviation for New Orleans, LA, from which all its original members hailed. While many assumed that the group would specialize in over-the-top, extreme metal, it contained more elements of classic rock than the member's usual bands (a prime influence of the group being Black Sabbath). After a supporting tour wrapped up, little was heard from the group, as the members returned back to their full-time projects, leading many to assume that Down as a one-off. But this proved not to be the case. Anselmo, Keenan, and Bower reconvened to work on new material in 2001, with Pantera bassist Rex Brown taking Strange's spot in the lineup. March 2002 saw the release of Down's long-awaited sophomore effort, the appropriately titled Down II. A third volume, Down III, followed in 2007. In 2010 the band released the live CD/DVD set, Diary of a Mad Band. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi
Hey all you DOWN fans i just found out DOWN has a new album soon toe be released. Seen DOWN live once in pennsylvania. machine head opened an down killed it. f**king great show got f**ked up and a ton of police outside of the concert fighting an f**kin s**t up lolll. NEWWW Album is recorded already just need a release date sometime in May of 2012. cant wait,, im a drummer and jimmy bowler is the s**t and probaly most underrate drummer out there. peaceeeee
What's crazy, is that what REALLY makes this album crush is Rex's bass. His tone absolutely destroys here and finally gave him the credit he deserves. Down II is full-sounding like all metal should sound, since it sounds ten times heavier. Two big fat f**king thumbs way up!!!
Down is what my band would be like if I got one together. This music is the closest to what I like to play as a musician as anything I've heard. Right up there with Sabbath.
one of the best live shows I've ever seen...and that's comparable to Rush...Phil kills it and the rest of the Down crew...much love
blacklistdave32
for my money this is the best band out today. Real music that has meaning and feeling to it. If you dig them check out my band at myspace.com/blacklistdallas or facebook.com/blacklistdallas if you have time. Not saying we're on their level, but we're in the same ballpark soundwise.
snowflakeh
why cant all music be down with just a little corrosion and a bit of clutch to mix it up. wait a min. that is the only s**t i listen to any way. life is good

One of the few bands that lay down a THICK crunchy groove and don't have a constipated sounding vocalist. Anselmo sounds more at ease here than he was with Pantera, and the music is just freaking awesome.
Well it took a few decades but these three albums are about as close as anyone is ever gonna come to Black Sabbath, especially without trying to be!!! Every album just drips with grooves, riffs and a total heaviness. Hope they can continue giving us these gems every couple years or so. And the best is that it carries over live even better, at least if Phil is on his game.

Down NOLA has got to be the most "American" album ever recorded. A classic that I have bought for so many friends. Classic riffs that are heavily laden with southern gravy...Pepper Keenan has become an iconic riffmaster with this album. Guitars are tuned waaaaay down yet never sound sloppy but rather ballsy! Anselmo shines here as well....a great album that should be an essential to everyone who loves to feel the music!....this album should be titled.."this is America!!!"
Baron Von "Douche Bag" claims to be down, but really just gets down on his knees and sucks off radio ready rock stars. F**K HellYea and F**k Damageplan. They both sucked a** and had these pop type break downs that truly sucked. Its BULLSHIT! Nickleback playng over Dimes riffs? You f**king joking? Hey Baron do more research you IDIOT!! You just read one magazine and its all phil, and nothing else. Guess what dumb a** PANTERA would not exist without him you f**k stain, nor would down, or superjoin

I really like Superjoint but I didn't like Viking Crown that much they had one or two good songs the rest of their music sucked the production was to raw.

I'd agree that early (pre-re-inventing) Pantera and Down are great bands, and Phil played a big part in that. But not everything Phil touches turns to gold...Superjoint is just alright in my book, nothing to write home about, and let's not forget about his mess of a lo-fi 'cult metal' band known as Viking Crown. I'm pretty sure that's where he started with that Hail Satan crap, and am glad to see that he's seemed to have outgrown it.
They never recaptured the feel of NOLA, but Down II and Over the Under are still decent albums. NOLA is just a beast.

Well it was mainly Phils fault that Pantera broke up but it wasn't all his fault He did start other projects after. Reinventing the steel after He said He was taking a year off but they werent calling him what was He suppose to do sit around and do. Nothing thats why He started other bands but the only people who know why Pantera. Broke up are Phil, Dime, Vinnie and Rex.
You are a fuckingTARD James Clark. Get off Phils Cockk you fagg.If you did have any semblance of a clue, you would know that Vinnie and Darrell Abbot were the FURTHEST thing from ego centric, they were fun loving mellow guys with crazy talent and DIMEBAG is a true metal GOD.pHIL is a great front man and I like his stage presence.always have but dude.he is the one who brok up PanterA,he was on drugs at the time and a complete assss who wasnt even talking with them after Reinventing the steel.
PHIL is a GOD. He did nothing but put up with the ego of dime and his stupid brother Vinnie. Look what other bands he has....DOWN and Super Joint...Both f**king true metal bands. Look what Vinnie had....HELL YEA? Damage Plan? Both of those bands were a slap in the face to TRUE Pantera fans. DAVE LANDIS F**K YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
