Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band was one of the most original musical ensembles of the disco era. They were formed in the Bronx in 1974 by Stony Browder, Jr. (b. 1949), his brother August Darnell (born Thomas Browder, 1951), singer Cory Daye (b. 1952), Andy Hernandez (b. 1950), and Mickey Sevilla (b. 1953). The concept of the group was the re-creation of a '30s dance band, à la Cab Calloway, with witty lyrics and a disco beat. All of this was in evidence on their debut album, Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band, released in 1976. It produced the dancefloor hit "Cherchez la Femme" and went gold. A follow-up album, Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band Meets King Pennett, was less successful. After the release of a third album, James Monroe HS Presents Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band Goes to Washington, the group fragmented, with Darnell and Hernandez going off to form Kid Creole & the Coconuts. Browder reorganized and issued a Dr. Buzzard's Savannah Band (dropping the "original") album titled Calling All Beatniks! in 1984. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi
70s babies rock! Love this Album. Culture music and definitely made NY PJ days seem like we had the world even if we didn't. Back in the days we did not have technology that made us part of a matrix like today. People danced felt conversed a d socialized real face to face in human form. Technology has brought great advances but slowly takes away the true meaning of humanity.
It was the one album of it's time that you knew all the words to every song. Fun times growing up in New York City in the 70's. Starship discovery, Underground, The Ice Palace,The Loft, The Tunnel, CBGB'S Funhouse, Studio and Xenons.. Let's not forget Paradise Garage. It was non stop partying. The music never stopped. Thank God we are still here to tell the stories. Life is good.
I remember my cousin gave this album to my sister for Christmas the year it came out.....I will always love this group and their songs....brings back soooo many memories!
...lol...and i still know all the words to a lot of the songs......almost 60 here, male and i look kinda funny singing along with female lead singer..lol. but stilll a fav.

Hey Laura - I was there too. Whispers, Fox Trap, Greenstreets, the Library, Cafe Erlanger, Herb Adderly's Big Play, Kim Graves .............and finally Impulse. Those were the days.
I was only ten years old at that time, but this album was played constantly in my home. That's when music was music with actual bands, and no biting anothers lyric's, and tunes.
