The Dreamlovers

The Dreamlovers were an early-'60s Philadelphia-based R&B quintet formed in 1956. The group -- Don Hogan (lead), James Dunn (bass), his brother Clifton Dunn (baritone), and tenors Tommy Ricks and Cleveland Hammock -- were originally known by several other names, including the Romancers (for a demo tape sent to the Cameo/Parkway label) and the Midnighters (for a 1958 jump tune called "The Twist," backing a new personality named Ernest Evans, later renamed Chubby Checker). In addition, they recorded for V-Tone briefly before signing with Heritage Records. Their biggest hit on their own was 1961's uplifting "When We Get Married," a reverent homage in vocal harmony harkening back to doo wop's heyday. The recording featured a full sound of harmony by the group and a strong lead by Hogan over melodic vibraphone instrumentation.

They returned to the charts on a smaller scale the next year with "If I Should Lose You," a ballad for George Goldner's End Records, and then managed to record quite a few delicious samples of East Coast R&B groove and vocal harmony, including a slow doo wop-styled ballad ("I'm Thru With You") and an infectious up-tempo dance number ("Anna Belle Lee"). As they continued recording, their vocal style seemed to change with the times, always sounding ahead of their time. "When We Get Married" was later revived by the Intruders in 1970. ~ Bryan Thomas, Rovi

WHEN WE GE MARRIED: This song was a hot spot in the day, and it still is! RQ/rlh
Never get tired of the Dreamlovers. Love to learn more about them- thank you all for the info. Jesse Ybarra
Sorry Morris, Its Morris Gardner
Morris Garner sang lead on 70% of songs including When We Get Married. Lets get the credits straight. Such a sorry error and such a shame groups that I personally knew and worked with in the past did not get the recognition they deserved.
The lead singer of the Dreamlovers is Morris Gardner, left side on bottom row. I don't know how Don Hogan's name was listed as Lead. Big, big, error.
They sort of remind me of the Harptones.
While we were dancing by the Dreamlovers. . . a n y one in Pandoraland remember dancing to that at the Lebanon Lodge in Pittsburgh ?

The lead singer, Morris Gardner's picture is the one on the bottom left on the Album Cover Golden Classics, 1994
Wonderful music to listen to!
Don Hogan on lead was never given the credit he deserves - this group had a great sound check out When We Get Married very cool
This group is sooooo cool - the write up about them has one error - the Midnighters was the group that backed up Hank Ballard (who had a small hit with it then Chubby Checker hit it big with the twist. Hank Ballard and The Midnighters had many hits ie Annie had a Baby, Work with me Annie, etc.
Some of the greatest Doo Wop came from groups out of Philly, but i think the N.Y. groups had the best!
Beautiful, absolutely beautiful piece of music--Love it.
if i should lose you what a great song why have we lost such great talents to meaningless songs!
Morris Gardner was the lead singer of the 1961 hit, When We Get Married. It is his picture featured on the album, Bottom Left. Why is there no mention? He did a fantastic job and his voice led the Dreamlovers to the sound that we love them most for. Tommy (I miss you) and all the rest, we will always love you guys.
A GREAT OLDIES SONG
REAL ODIES BUT GOODIE- SLOW DANCE
why is it you never play the dreamlovers hit when we get married?
