Peter Warlock (1894-1930) was a British composer, best known for his brilliant art songs. Born Philip Heseltine, he used the pseudonym of Peter Warlock first for his acerbic music criticism, then adopted it for his compositions. Warlock's vocal music is tonal with modal shadings, well-matched to natural speech rhythms, and quite lyrical in expression, when it isn't high-spirited and boisterous. In addition to his songs, Warlock also composed a small body of orchestral works, among which the Capriol Suite is the most popular. Warlock also edited much Elizabethan music and co-published the music journal The Sackbut. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi
