The Duprees

One of the final Italian doo wop groups to make a wave in the early '60s, the Duprees were in some senses not a rock & roll act at all. They relied on updates of pre-rock pop standards for most of their material, dressed up in classy big band arrangements. Their New Jersey street-corner roots were still audible in their doo wop harmonies, giving their treatments of moldy oldies enough of a contemporary flavor to compete in the rock and pop marketplace. They were very good at what they did, and in 1962-1963, they were very successful: "You Belong to Me" (previously recorded by Jo Stafford, Patti Page, Dean Martin, and Joni James) made the Top Ten, and "My Own True Love" (from the soundtrack of Gone With the Wind), "Have You Heard," and "Why Don't You Believe Me" were also Top 40 hits. The Duprees were already retro when they were at their peak, and were washed out by the British Invasion, although they continued to record throughout the late '60s, sometimes in a Jay & the Americans/Vogues style. ~ Richie Unterberger

I was so fortunate to grow up two block from the ocean in the 50's-60's. The Jersey Shore (Asbury Park ) Fabulous songs, cars and chasing girls along the strip filled our glorious summer nights!! Never to be repeated - never to be forgotten!!

Don't read this because it actually works. You will be kissed on the nearest Friday by the love of your life. Tomorrow will be the best day of your life. However if you don't post this you will die in 2 days. Now you have started reading this so don't stop. This is so scary put this on at least 5 songs in the next 143 minutes. When done press f6 and your lovers name will appear on the screen in big letters this is so scary because it actually works

The original Dupree's were great, even when Mike Kelly took over the lead. Richie Rosato was also very good. Today's Dupree's are popular but only acknowledged in the past few years that none of them are originals and at the same time two of the originals are still alive but can't use the name Dupree's or sing with them. Tired of hearing their rendition of Jackie Wilson songs. Sing the songs that made the Dupree's great back in the early 60's.

Some of the best doo wop sounds started in my hometown, Brooklyn, New York. Love the Duprees, Dion and the Belmonts, etc. Also appreciated the Murray the K shows at the Brooklyn Paramount/Fo x . I had all the albums from the shows.
Great music, romance and memories.

This is the quintessence of the sweetness of the 1950's and 1960's. Listening to it just now washed away the 50+ years that has elapsed since dancing with Karen at the Teen Friday night dances held in the basement of a large church Shaker Heights, Ohio. I can still remember Tap Tappenden walking around with a ruler making sure that there was always at least a 6 distance between the teen couples dreamily moving around the floor - so oblivious at his attempts to bring us down out of our bliss

This song is a classic! I wouldn't exactly say they were 'retro' before they peaked. They were the music of the day
