Editors

Formed in 2003, Editors became one of the leading bands in the post-punk revival that swept America and England during the early 21st century. Originally dubbed Snowfield, the group comprised four music technology students from Stafford University -- singer/guitarist Tom Smith, lead guitarist Chris Urbanowicz, bassist Russell Leetch, and drummer Ed Lay -- all of whom had relocated to Birmingham after graduation. A series of a well-received club dates and demo recordings earned Editors some attention from British labels, and the group soon signed with the revitalized Kitchenware, the venerable indie label once home to Prefab Sprout.

Kitchenware issued the band's debut single, "Bullets," in early January 2005. The record reportedly sold out in one day, and its sound earned comparisons to the dark, dramatic atmospherics of contemporary bands like Interpol and Bloc Party (not to mention veteran outfits like Joy Division and Echo & the Bunnymen). Editors' follow-up single, "Munich," made them darlings of the U.K. music press, and just weeks after their standout performance at the annual Glastonbury Music Festival, the band issued a third single, "Blood." Their much-anticipated debut LP, The Back Room, followed in mid-2005. "Munich" was reissued in January 2006 to ramp up support for the album, which entered the Top Five in the U.K. and eventually earned platinum sales. A U.S. tour with stellastarr* coincided with the American release of The Back Room in March, and a Mercury Music Prize nomination followed in July.

Editors' sophomore effort, An End Has a Start, came out the following summer, preceded by the Top 10 single "Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors." Like its predecessor, the album went platinum in the U.K. and maintained the band's modest audience in America, where the band returned in September 2007 to launch another stateside tour. Editors remained on the road through the middle of 2008, playing a slew of festivals in the U.K. and opening a string of European shows for R.E.M. before the year was up. The musicians had grown tired of their sound, however, and 2009 found them tinkering with synthesizers and industrial music. After enlisting the help of producer Flood (known for his work with Depeche Mode, U2, and Nine Inch Nails), the band decamped to the studio to record In This Light and on This Evening, which unveiled the band's new direction upon its release in October 2009. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

Best band of early 21 First Century!!

The Smith & Burrows CD contains Christmas Music. My favorite cuts are When The Thames Froze, Only You, , This Ain't New Jersey, & The Christmas Song with agnes Obel ( an awesome version of The Christmas Song). Hopefully to become Christmas Classics.

Waiting for a major U.S. tour! Check out the collabaorati o n from Tom Smith (Editors) & Andy Burrows (We Are Scientists), Smith & Burrows. Found it on Amazon.
Pretty sure Interpol fought them and beat them in a NYC club.

love thess guys
Quite legendary i think.
I love their song No Sound But the Wind. It's beautiful, but slightly sad.
waaooo
F**king awesome, as in awe-inspirin g .

To me, they're just a bad knockoff of Interpol. Honestly, I don't get it.
cool.
Editors are amazing as well as Interpol & JOy division!!!! I lLOVE THEM ALL.
I had this going in the background and would've * sworn * it was Interpol. Not surprised to see their name turn up in the bio.
WOW....great music and if not noticeable my human ears, than all hail the angels cry for such divinity...I f you area going to draw any comparisons than where is the Joy Division mention???
lyrics mean different things to different people, there is no one certain direct interperitat i o n . I think the voice is the best part of a great band. Its only a little like interpol as well..
Tom Smith's voice is like heaven to me.
Tom Smith's voice is what makes them so interesting. The sound is really tight and polished. Currently my favorite band.
i agree mr c. editors are one of the best bands ever. they need to tour here in the states. I would love to see them!!
Good lord some of you are embarrassing . This is actually really good music. Get away from mainstream pop.
Interesting. I guess I never looked at Editors Pandora page. I have The Back Room, and it's outstanding. Of course I only bought it because it was on sale when I was buying other stuff. But I like it, and will buy their other one. If Interpol came first, which they did, then how can you not say copycat? That's not always a bad thing. Oh, and I think they both have stupid lyrics.
Haha his voice sounds like the vampire puppet from Forgetting Sarah Marshall
his voice is weird and doesn't seem to fit.
Man with a name like editors you think they would have better lyrics
you yanks are all deaf as well as fat and stupid... lol the land of the clones
Someone said they saw you...=D

While we are on the 'sounds like game,' I hear a little Dead Can Dance in there.

Although indeed their style is very similar to that of Interpol there are some distinct differences. . . Perhaps even enough to allow the enjoyment of editors without having to focus on their "copy-cattin e s s " . The vocals, in my opinion are fairly different from those of Interpol. The lead singer's voice is distinctly lower, and maybe even less annoying. I might even go as far as to say that The Editors' vocals are better than Interpol's. However, Interpol has a sort of put-together n e s s that is gud
I love these guys! my favorite quote from one of their songs is, "In the end, all you can hope for is the love you felt to equal the pain you've gone through".
I like them. Listening to Munich I like to imagine Frank Sinatra as the singer.

If Editors is derivate, so is Interpol. A band can make perfectly good music even if it is derivative.

Muse is not a Radiohead wannabe band. Bellamy sounds like Yorke, but only sometimes. Muse has many influences. Queen is another. (Ever heard "Soldier's Poem"?) Muse recalls '70's progressive rock bands at times. To say that Muse is a Radiohead wannabe band is like saying that Beyonce is an Etta James wannabe because she covered "At Last."
Kind words? I guess I'll keep calling you a douche then, one thing I won't argue with. How did I contradict myself exactly? In my original post I said they sound incredibly similar to Interpol, I never said I didn't like them, infact I said "I like both bands." You should probably learn to read before you begin typing on your fisher price keyboard. douche.
Thanks for the kind words AmiKelson. You contradict yourself and then get upset because Muse is a wannabe Radiohead band. Don't worry, Muse will always have Knights Of Cydonia (That's about the ONLY original stuff they have) I say they kindly ask Radiohead to join the band, somebody has to make the tea for Thom and Johnny.
I'd rather not turn Editors page into a flame war because this is a great band and this douche down here wouldn't probably care if it did turn into one. I am embarresed for you quite honestly. I thought we all gave up the short bus line in 3rd grade...
jcomes13
These guys are great!!!
Muse totally ripped Radiohead off. Last I heard, Radiohead was suing Muse over that rip-off case. Interpol and local authorities are said to be investigatin g the case. You have no clue what you speak of AmiKelson. Did you ride the short bus in school? Where is your helmet?
i usually don't like to say one band sounds like another because it's usually not the case. (like people who say Muse sound like Radiohead are, infact, complete retards). Having said that, Editors sound incredibly similar to Interpol. I like both bands but I could probably put all their songs in a big shuffle and hardly tell any difference.
Interpol would kick there a**. without question.
Editors vs. Interpol in a celebrity death match. Who would win?
nattotastic
Ozmarelda: well said.

I think these guys are fine. They sound like Joy Division, but so what? So does Interpol. So do countless other bands. That says more about Joy Division's influence on modern rock than anything else.
plaidsam2002
I don't care what you guys say. Hdcardona said what I was thinking. I understand flattery is complimentar y , but there is nothing slightly original to anything I've heard from these folks. I'm trying to be open minded, but it's not working.
ich_traum
Just because artists have a similar aesthetic doesn't mean they're posers or copycats. Interpol's Paul Banks is on the same page as Ian Curtis of Joy Division, who took more than a little inspiration from Jim Morrison, whose vocal style grew out of Frank Sinatra's deadpan croon. Frankie, by the way, rocked the skinny tie before most of us were born.

When you grow up someday, you'll come to understand how petty your observation truly is. The great expanse of brain tissue may overwhelm you, at first. Give it time. If you actually follow through with your own thoughts once in a while. . .You just might harness an actual opinion worth reading by others. Good luck with that.

Editors + Interpol are equally delicious to the ears, if you ask me. Why force them to compete when you can enjoy them both ?
I want that dude's, I think Tom Smith, trench coat. That thing just looks awesome. I must wonder how to go about acquiring one.
jjkringle
Im sorry, how many band wear the "skinny black ties"? What a lame comment. Billy from Green Day wears a skinny black tie too sometimes... d o e s that mean he wants to be like Interpol too. and to be quite honest, I think Interpol would appreciate the compliment. Copycat is the scincerest form of flattery. Go learn something why dont you.
These guys jumped on the Interpol bandwagon. They even go as far as wearing the skinny black leather ties. Posers!!
this is Interpol meets U2... love them!!

The editors, stellastar* and interpol would make one great show. :)
dude this band is awsome ^_^
wow you all suck

I'm sadder.
