Gothic metal ensemble Elis have earned a passionate international following for their music, which combines the aggressive guitars and explosive drums of heavy metal with accents of orchestral music, folk music, and electronica. Based in the Central European nation of Liechtenstein, the members of Elis began their career in 2000 as Erben der Schopfung under the direction of keyboard player Oliver Falk, with Sabine Duenser contributing striking lead vocals. The group gained significant press and radio attention for their debut single, "Elis," and their first full-length album, Twilight. While the German rock magazine Orkus named Erben der Schopfung the best new act of 2001 and they earned rave reviews from fans and the press for their appearance at Leipzig's Wave Gotik Festival, Falk and the rest of the band reached a creative impasse; he continued on with a new lineup as Erben der Schopfung, while Duenser, guitarists Pete Streit and Juergen Broger, bassist Tom Saxer, and drummer Franky Koller split off to form Elis. The new group issued their first album in 2003, God's Silence, Devil's Temptation, which was released by noted metal imprint Napalm Records. After touring Europe, Belgium, and Switzerland in support of the album, Elis returned to the studio in 2004 (Rene Marxer having replaced Koller on drums) with producer Alexander Krull to begin work on their next project, Dark Clouds in a Perfect Sky. The album was released in 2005 and earned them continued acclaim in the gothic metal community, with extensive European touring following after new drummer Max Naescher replaced Marxer behind the kit. Elis next began work on their third album, a concept piece about two brothers called Griefshare, with Krull once again producing and new guitarist Chris Gruber filling in for Broger, who left the band in 2005. Shortly before Griefshare was completed, Sabine Duenser died of a cerebral hemorrhage on July 7, 2006; the band opted to retain her vocals as a tribute to their friend, and the album came out in Europe in the fall of 2006, with an American release scheduled for January 16, 2007. In late December 2006, Elis announced that Sandra Schleret, former vocalist with Dreams of Sanity and Siegfried, had been confirmed as the group's new lead singer. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
Something I wish Elis had done was change the font/script in which their band name is on "Catharsis" forward to show/indicate the change/era of singers. I mention "Catharsis" specifically b/c "Show Me The Way" is the last of recorded songs done by Sabine, though Sandra does sing the 1st & 5th/last tracks w/Sabine's vocals on the tracks 2-4, on "Show Me The Way". With "Catharsis" being the beginning of a new era of Elis music. :)
I almost bought that today, until I remembered I'd accidentally left my storage medium at home, and then I ended up grabbing the new Epica album instead since it was on sale. It's on the list though!
I have no clue what it means, but can't say that I care, in German or whatever, it all about how the song makes you feel.
Woah, wait, Yoho. Your sister's 25, and is a Twilight fangirl? That's f**ked up! My 16-year-old sister is a huge fan,but given her age, I can overlook that. You poor, poor soul, Matthew.
I knew Twilight was horrifying when my sister randomly told me she wanted her own vampire - and she is 25 and should really know better. Everyone else in the family thinks she's crazy.
The popularity of Twilight has made liking vampires something you have to qualify, lest you be taken for somebody who is totally lame - curse it forever!
it's even more painful that I'm a fan of vampires, but everyone assumes I'm a Twilight fangirl. I'm loose on the concept of vampires, but Twilight f**ked it up. it's embarrassing.
anyway, Elis is pretty good. it seems that only their first album God's Silence, Devil's Temptation was very weak.
I love Tarja for her strong and great voice, Sabine for her deep and clear chords, but most of all and my favorite all times is Liv Kristine for her angelical and quick changing vocals, she was amazing at theater of tragedy.
I discovered this band a couple months ago on my Epica station. Innocent Hearts is what got me on to Elis and similar bands. My condolences to the guys and the Duenser family.
ELIS FOREVER!

yeah wow.. take a chill pill mr. drummer dude of selfishness.. what a jerk! get over urself.
They sound NOTHING LIKE NIGHTWISH!!!!!!!!!! Sabine sang with choirs do you hear any hint of opera in her vocals? NO!!!! lack of musical knowledge and mental laziness is where these comments stem from. Also, to the moron who suggested the lyrics are "painfully bad", Sabine's native language was german you IDIOT! Learn something about the band before you blow off your uninformed opinion. Better yet inform your opinions!

are they any good?
Love to see them in concert.

the only annoying thing about them is that they don't stand out as much as some other bands. :(
if I ever wanted one, it better not be a freaking Twilight one. they are glittery, masochistic supermodels. >.<
