Ah the memories of listening to this over and over again on 8-track in my parent's Volvo station wagon. Since we couldn't easily play the 8-track in the house, we bought the LP which included the lyrics and I was off to the races. Little league, growing up in Willow Glen and Elton John! Yeah baby.
I've read a bio on Elton, and apparently, he really did try to commit suicide by sticking his head into a gas oven. (The door was too uncomfortable though, so he went and got a pillow!) He was saved by his friend, Long John Baldry, and that's where Bernie Taupin got the inspiration for this song. Very powerful indeed.
Don't be afraid to set yourself free from your "Sugar Bear". If you feel hooks or that you are being roped and tied, STOP and reevaluate. Awesome song.

Never paid any attention to the lyrics before. Terrific poetry. So what do you think it's about? Sounds to me like a guy who, at the last minute, decided his girlfriend was just too domineering to throw his life away on.
