I believe at the time of this recording, he had obviously been offended by a column he read. Benny (ie. Benzadrine) and the jets, in my mind, was Elton (benny) and the Jets (roadies).
I love that they dubbed in the audience after they recorded the original version in studio. Whoever thought giving the song a "live" feel would make the song all that much better was a VERY wise person ...
The cool thing about this song is that Elton can play the opening Major 7th chord just once and people instantly recognize it.

Simply, in my opinion, his greatest song that wasn't a love song.
Very, very, very catchy. But it repeats itself a lot.
