This song is a 9+ in my book. And 10s are hard to come by. I'm not sure it's one of the greatest pieces of music ever... I tend to think of some things that are a wee bit older, but it is a progressive rock masterpiece. One way I can tell is that when it comes on, my wife leaves the room in a hurry... not sure why.

Tarkus has been one of my favorites since it's release, it's the total package for Prog, imho. RIP Keith, honored to see them perform

Confusion will be my epitaph, as I crawl a cracked and broken path, if we make it we can all sit back and laugh

I saw ELP back in 72 mid-summer at the SD Sports Arena they played in quadraphonic stereo (displayed massive floor speakers aftend of the arena) and just blew us away! LOUD AMG sometimes I had to put my fingers in my ears to reduce thee high pitch moog from Emerson! What a great show and Tarkus tight Emerson & Palmer show all by themselve

Easily one of the top five long tracks of the Prog era. Just maybe the best one. However that's a matter of opinion for those who really appreciate this. Definitely great musicianship .

@droth770 -- Thanks for the grin. Great musicianship was not listed in Pandora's list of characterist i c s and I was questioning this omission.

Greg Lake despised this piece of music when Keith introduced it to him.Told Keith If you want to do this ,You'l have to do it on your solo album. Glad Greg finally came around to realize how great this is and decided to contribute to it and record it.

ELP at their finest hour- phenomenol piece of musicianship . Love Greg's voice on this one.

Brighthue, I can understand that you would not think that this is great musicianship with that New Kids on the Block CD in your car

I bought this album on a whim, and it blew me away. After this though side two was just OK – they should have switched them. I saw them when they had Cozy Powell on drums and he gave it some serious heaviness that you don't get from Palmer's playing.

Yes, great piece of music! Arguably, second only to Karn Evil 9.

This isn't "great musicianship ? "

The Tarkus suite is a complex masterpiece. It is the second best ELP album, and one of the greatest pieces of music all time. Each time you listen to it, the better it gets. I saw them play it live in 1998 and really hoped they would have put that on a dvd, but it didn't happen. That was the most awesome version I have heard them play it....watchi n g Emerson playing the keys and Palmer was intense!!!! Take a listen to Tarkus and ENJOY!!!!

The "Tarkus" suite with "Stones Of Years" still gives me {{{CHILLS}}} after all these years.
