Isaac Albéniz (1860-1909) was the first widely recognized Spanish composer of the nationalistically splintered post-Romantic period. His use of Spanish rhythms and harmonies in his music paved the way for Granados, de Falla, and others who would shortly follow in his footsteps. The most popular, and many say most important, of his works is Iberia, a suite in four books describing different regions of Spain. Albéniz was a brilliant pianist, earning praise from an early age, so most of his compositions were for that instrument, but given the flavor of his writing, it is almost as frequently heard transcribed for guitar. ~ Patsy Morita, Rovi
