Sergey Prokofiev

April 23, 1891 - March 5, 1953
born in Russia, composed during the Modern period
Sergey Prokofiev (1891-1953) was among the most prolific and original composers of the first half of the 20th century, excelling in virtually every musical genre. Many of his early works were modernist, and like many Russian artists, he was censored during the Soviet regime, but he was able to adapt to its restrictions while retaining his artistic integrity. His best-known works include the cantata Alexander Nevsky, the film score Lieutenant Kijé, the ballet Romeo and Juliet, and his "Classical" and Fifth symphonies. His children's tale Peter and the Wolf is one of the most familiar and beloved pieces of 20th century music. ~ Stephen Eddins, Rovi

I saw Lugansky playing Rachmaninov and Prokofiev at the Gilmore Festival and he was absolutely amazing.

Head over heels in love with Prokofiev since insisting my mom play Peter and the Wolf every single day for a good chunk of my sixth year of life - 'til the gift she'd given me of that record drove her plum bonkers, and she bought me loads of other Prokofiev delights. Love that mom of mine.

Most evocative of the "Modern Russians" He also has wonderful, lilting folk dances. I love falling asleep listening to Prokofiev and Edvard Grieg

I am part of the Los Angeles children's chorus and LA opera organization s I feel that when I had to sing Juliet's part in Romeo and Juliet and the ballet performers went on and danced this part a new world opened up in my eyes

Prokofiev had to hire people for his orchestratio n s he found it so difficult, according to Shostakovich (who might be exaggerating as was his way).

Prokofiev's 5th symphony is perhaps my favorite piece of music any fan of his should listen to it.

Dave--agreed , and his work is amazing. Be careful, though...one of the reasons many don't listen to classical music is the I know best review. Do you want a world where the Beatles hopelessly simple I Saw Her Standing There never existed? Perhaps, but I'm glad it's in the rotation.

For anyone who thinks classical music is boring, listen to Lt. Kife and you will realize most of modern pop, which, for the most part is simply based on three chords (the 1st, 4th and 5th of the major scale) is hopelessly based on a very simple cookie cutter structure, repeated in most songs today. Prokofiev's genius is all the more evident when you consider the restrictions placed on him under Communism.

I remember listening to this when i was younger trying to fall asleep to wonderful music

He is the Einstein of composers, like Igor Stravinsky, way ahead of his
contemporari e s . Philip Glass is also of the species and greatly inspired
by them especially when I am painting or drawing. James,

A genius @ work&play; I am so humbly jealous of his creativity and artistry but too impressed not to give my full compliments and heartfelt appreciation . Thank you Mr. Prokofiev.

Yes, Eisenstadt's movie is a classic - he commissioned Prokofiev to write the score. If you get a chance, see the movie. Black and white, rather crude compared with today's movies, but it is nothing short of gripping. My favorite scene is where the organist (gnarled and threatening) is hauling his 'portable' organ across the ice with the advancing army. The Russian version of bagpipes, yes?

his Alexansder Nevsky was a film score most often heard reorchestrat e d for symphonic performance. The 1933 movie was stirring propoganda creating a 10th century hero fighting Germans (teutonic knights) preparing russians for the war certain to come - it did arrive in 1942. The scenes of the knights charging across the frozen lake with prokovievs incredible music is unforgettabl

Poor Prokofiev! He had the misfortune to die on the very same day that Soviet dictator Josef Stalin died. Otherwise, his death would have been big news.

I love his music so much, it's ridiculous. Prokofiev matches my taste about 98%. Piano music, Ballets, Symphonies, and so much more, my favorite music of all time. He even made a Flute Sonata, which I've played.

Mr. Prokofiev bears a remarkable resemblance to the English literary critic/autho r / t h e o l o g i a n C.S. Lewis. That's of no particular significance , just a casual observation.
