One of the most popular pop/jazz groups, Fattburger has been classified by some as new adult contemporary music, contemporary jazz, or smooth jazz. The San Diego-based unit has survived through many trends and still plays the same type of accessible funky music that was its original goal. Saxophonist Hollis Gentry, while in high school, led a group (Power) that opened for Cannonball Adderley at a college concert in 1972. After graduating, Gentry toured with R&B groups. He attended San Diego State University and during the second half of the 1970s had opportunities to play straight-ahead jazz with Bruce Cameron. When their last band broke up, Gentry and the other musicians (keyboardist Carl Evans, bassist Mark Hunter, drummer Kevin Koch, and guitarist Steve Laury) went out on their own and became Fattburger. Tommy Aros joined the band as their percussionist and in the early '90s, when Laury started a solo career, Evan Marks became Fattburger's guitarist. In the mid 90's, Fattburger found a home on the Shanachie label, releasing a string of well-received albums into the 21st Century. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
When you meet a sensual woman in the city. and you are in a motel. Look'en out the window You just finished the 3rd round. In the backround. Fatburger play'en Life isn't bad. love to all Cabinboy.
I agree with Paul. Music too cool not to be on the radio. Good thing we have Pandora. If we listened to this genre more there would be a lot less violence in the world. Such a groove...
It is really sad that so many jazz radio stations arejust disappearing off the radio dial...still makes no sense at all...so many people here haven't said one bad thing about it.You can't, right?Right. Its not gratting,vulger,obnoxious..but quite the opposite.Puts one in a great positive mood.Just don't get it.Something is up..my opinion...
o, and one other small fact... these guys are international, i personally spread their data where ever i went in the 20+ years in the canoe club... that was worldwide in the nautical sense... :) we can just have 98.1 play the background music in heaven... lol... good night... zzzzzzzzzzzzzz...
i don't know how many of their cd's i have but definately more than one... they were the main music at one of my wedding(s)... i went to hs with Tommy but i never made the connection till a couple of years ago the class something not class(mates)... classreport i think... anyways... lots of good local highly creative musicans in san diego, gotta love it... :) the clock says four:20 so gotta go... :)

I remember Hollis was playing at a club on San Diego Harbor way back in the 80's, with Charles McPherson, and they had a couple who lead the SD Jazz Society (he taught at SDSU and played trombone , she played piano I believe). They graciously played some 12 bar improv for me so that I could play some harmonica with them. They invited me back but I wasn't really good enough then, and I knew it! Still, I'd sit and sip my $2 Michelob and listen. Good times!
The single One of a Kind...one of my all-time favorite songs! One of those songs I get totally lost in it. Then I met my wife and that made the lyrics so personal!
TRAIL OF TEARS is a really nice groove. It's got just the right amount of funk, dance, jazz and Native American elements. I wish it were a bit longer for dance clubs.
Love me some Fattburger, big time!! Catch the groove!

Fattburger is my second-favorite band. Sorry, but Fourplay tops everything!
there are many smooth jazz groups, but, Fattburger tops the lists. I have enjoyed them along with other groups like Acoustic Alchemy, Pieces of a dream, and many more. I hope Fattburger never stops producing great smooth jazz, They are perfect at what they do!!!
Fattburger has always been one of my favorite smoothjazz groups. I first attended one of their concert performances in Denver at the smooth jazz Cafe (quite a while back) and the last concert of theirs I attended was at the Jazz Festival on Catalina Island. I know the group as well as their fans will miss Carl Evans.
I met Hollis Gentry 1984 hwile I was stationed in San Diego. He was a really cool guy and a great musician. I always enjoyed their show and hated to leave San Diego. RIP HOLLIS and Carl Evans.
re hollis gentry, you're correct. hollis went to uc san diego. i attended at the same time and knew hollis casually. hollis died in '06 but could no longer play after a car accident in '04. he was just a cool brotha', nice to everybody he met, always had a kind smile. below is a link to his obit from the san diego site. http://legacy.signonsandiego.com/news/obituaries/20060907-9999-1m7gentry.html
