I started off liking the Steve Earle's version more, but after a few times listening to both I like this one better. To me it sounds like it's sung more Celtic like and Steve's sounds more Country. Also, the pace seems a little faster in this version which I believe pulls the overall feel of the song together better.

I have to agree about God Earle's rendition. But I like this one too and I'm just happy to see that a song written by tattooed Texan can become a Celtic standard.

Sang along to this at an Irish bar in Denver one time - it's become one of their standards. The singer pays tribute to Steve (or God, as I call him) by saying "this one was written by a guy from Texas..." :)

Steve Earle wrote this, actually. I lived in Salthill for a while - it's weird to hear it mentioned in such an often-played song.
