Film School

Inspired by post-punk, dream pop, and a touch of electronica, the San Francisco-via-New York quintet Film School began as the brainchild of vocalist/guitarist Krayg Burton (aka Greg Bertens), who began recording under the Film School name in the late '90s. After releasing the I'm Not Working 7" on MeToo! Records, Burton joined forces with a rotating cast of musicians to make 2001's full-length A Brilliant Career, including members of F**k and Elephone as well as Pavement and Preston School of Industry's Scott Kannberg. Also involved in the sessions were keyboardist Jason Ruck and guitarist/vocalist Nyles Lannon (also of the electronic group Technicolor and his side project n.lannon), who both became permanent members of the band. For the tour supporting A Brilliant Career, Film School recruited Lannon's fellow Technicolor bass player Justin LaBo and drummer Ben Montesano. This lineup recorded 2003's Alwaysnever EP for Kannberg's boutique label Amazing Grease. After appearing at South by Southwest early in 2005, Film School signed to Beggars Banquet and began recording, joined by new drummer Donny Newenhouse. The On & On EP arrived that fall and heralded the release of their self-titled album in winter 2006. Film School's lineup had almost completely changed by the time Hideout, their third album, arrived in 2007; bassist Lorelei Plotcyz, guitarist Dave Dupuis, and drummer James Smith added to the album’s darker, more cohesive sound. The group spent most of 2008 touring in support of the album and contributed a cover of “An American Dream” to the Love and Rockets tribute album New Tales to Tell the following year. When Beggars Banquet dissolved and left Film School without a label, the bandmembers planned to release their fourth album, Fission, by themselves. However, Hi-Speed Soul, which issued albums by the group’s former tourmate Adam Franklin, stepped in and gave Fission a mid-2010 release. ~ Heather Phares

I see I commented 6 years ago. I actually left Pandora for most of those 6 years. I love this band, and actually did get to see them live in Buffalo, N.Y. And I sat with Greg's two Uncles, who came from Rochester, as that was about the closest they ever played to there. They've pretty much since thrown in the towel as a full-time band, although I'm hoping we'll see more material in the future on a hobby basis.

I love this band, I love their song "when I'm yours" it's awesome and now after adding bands like broken social scene, el ten eleven, Interpol, the Radio dept., the Sea and Cake, say hi to your mom, and The Postal Service for example added on variety. I'm really gonna enjoy the Film School station and other artist stations I have with the new Pandora One 7-day free trial! Try it people it works! July is starting to be great already!

It's hard to listen to this at work. It launches me into introspectiv e daydreams.

My biggest critique of Film School is that they really should look outside their standard tempo a little. You don't have to rock it out out, just try something outside your standard BPM so that every song doesn't sound like the song before it.

Quite honestly, the ear begins to tune out sound-alikes after awhile, which will affect the staying power of any band. Every time I hear a Film School song, I think, is this the same song? You can't say that about Catherine Wheel, or MBV.

I really like this band, they remind me of The Cure and other 80's bands like them.

Reminds me of Ride. The band, not the verb. "Leave them all behind"

His voice is remniscent of Roger Waters though the sound is more new wave-ish than Pink Floyd. I like the song, would love to hear more from them.

Thank you, Pandora, for introducing me to Film School. Alwaysnever is one of the greatest EP's i've heard (as far as shoegaze and noise/dream pop go). Amazon has acquired a lot of money from me in the past few months!

It's chill, and it's pretty damn good. Film School is quickly becoming one of my favorite bands :D

Musically a good group, however, the vocals are some undecipherab l e mumbling.
I am glad at least Javier understands what they are talking about.

There 2006 album took a while to grow on some people. I noticed it worked likr a medicine where ones body adjusts and begins to feel what they are trying to get across and how they are feeling. Ahead of their time in emotion.

My mind just opened up for some odd reason. I never heard of this band and I love them already...or at least this song. (^_^)

Happy listening all.

Good band, I'm glad I discovered them via Pandora. Sound like The Cure quite a bit. I guess if The Killers can make it big, so could these guys. :-)
