Fishbone

Combining equal parts of deep funk, high-energy punk, and frantic ska, the Los Angeles-based Fishbone was one of the most distinctive and eclectic alternative rock bands of the late '80s. With their hyperactive, self-conscious diversity, goofy sense of humor, and sharp social commentary, the group gained a sizable cult following during the late '80s, yet they were never able to earn a mainstream audience.

Led by vocalist/saxophonist Angelo Moore, the band formed in 1979 while the members were still in junior high; the original lineup comprised Moore, Chris Dowd, Kendall Jones, Walter Kibby II, and John Norwood Fisher. After performing in local clubs during the early '80s, the group signed with Columbia Records in the mid-'80s, releasing a self-titled EP in 1985. The following year, Fishbone released their first full-length album, In Your Face. While it was marred by a somewhat slick production, the sheer energy of their performances burned through the slightly polished surface. In 1987, the band released the Christmas EP It's a Wonderful Life (Gonna Have a Good Time).

Truth and Soul (1988), Fishbone's second album, captured the band at their most ambitious, as they slammed back and forth between heavy metal and funk, throwing in an acoustic number and a cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Freddie's Dead" for balance. The album expanded their audience and charted at number 153. However, the band didn't record a new album for another three years. In the meantime, they made two EPs -- Ma and Pa (1989) and Bonin' in the Boneyard (1990) -- which basically comprised several B-sides. Before 1991's The Reality of My Surroundings Fishbone added second guitarist John Bigham. The Reality of My Surroundings didn't depart from the band's reckless eclecticism; it refined it. The album was a hit, peaking at number 49 and receiving positive reviews. However, the record didn't establish the band as a mainstream success, nor did 1993's Give a Monkey a Brain and He'll Swear He's the Center of the Universe, despite their appearance at the third Lollapalooza.

Even when the third wave ska revival began to rise to popularity in 1996, Fishbone was left behind, as their 1996 record Chim Chim's Bad A** Revenge -- their first album for Arista -- was ignored, as was the double-disc compilation Fishbone 101: Nuttasaurusmeg Fossil Fuelin. Despite their poor sales, the group remained a popular concert attraction, issuing the all-star Psychotic Friends Nuttwerx in the spring of 2000. Unfortunately, Hollywood Records had little support for the album and it disappeared after a few disappointing months. They were dropped from the label the following summer, with side projects and various other things keeping them busy during this rough period. An EP featuring a 20-minute jam with Primus, entitled Friendliest Psychosis of All, was released on their own label in the spring of 2002, followed by a live album full of new songs, Live at the Temple Bar and More, in the summer. In 2006 their album Still Stuck in Your Throat appeared in Europe. It arrived in the U.S. in April the next year. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

This has to be the most talented band that walks the planet. People read between the lines and listen to the songs you normally wouldn't they are gems..nutmeg . . s l o w bus movin..one day....end the reign..getti n i that a**. This has to be one of the most important bands in history.
I saw these guys headline the High Times World Hemp Exhibition at Conde's Red Wood Lumber outside of Eugene, OR in '92 or '93. Outdoors in July at the 45 parralel. It was a lifechanger. Fishbone will forever have a uniqe spot in my memories of America when it was still kind' working. I didn't feel all the hate and divisiveness that I do today.
Sourpuss kinda reminds me of Frank Zappa and the Mothers...
Party at Ground Zero was played all the time on KROQ back in the early 80's -- awsome song!
you haven't heard music until you've listened to Fishbone.
Talkin' about my buddies funk it up Fishbone!!

How come no mention of Fish on drums as part of the original lineup??? One of the best drummers ever......
they're fun and interesting.
God! I want to play the bass again! This drummer and bassist sound like the same guy. F**king awesome!
Fishbone is THE GREATEST! ALL OF THEIR ALBUMS ARE AHEAD OF THEIR TIME! That's why they never had commercial success, and the fact that they are black band doing rock and roll in america!
jimlipari
One of the best live bands I've EVER seen! And no s**t Robert, where are The Untouchables ? ! ?
rjcrouse
I love Fishbone but how did they manage 6 albums and The Untouchables only one? :/
My brother had swiped some cassette tapes from some college kids car. And one of the tapes was Fishbone. I was hooked. I got to see them open for the Beastie Boys back in '85. Too bad for the Boys b/c no one, and I mean NO ONE, puts on a better show than them! They had that place rocking the whole time they were on stage. That's why they were never "mainstream" . The best way to appreciate them was seeing them live!
The original line up included: brothers, John "Norwood" Fisher and Phillip "Fish" Fisher. Pandora, please revise this biography if possible. I don't think they could have played without their drummer! ;)

Seen them at the We The People festival in LA and they put on the best show!

If these guys came out today I would dismiss them as another too many musics fusion band. Not a dis on them, but my own jaded a**. Being actual black dudes gave these guys more credibility, and being tight as s**t band . Ska kind of went the way of blues rock. Who wants to see another group of all white suburban dudes feeling the "roots" of Muddy Waters. Some can pull it off, and thats what makes bands like Madness so great.
cristian402
met ANgelo Moore yesterday. greatest moment ever
Fishbone Forever! Chilli peppers owe their whole career to Angelo and the boys! deserve R&R HOF consideratio n for smashing barriers
I can remember driving around Tokyo with Angelo and Norwood in my car, just checking the city out. Never a tighter band nor a group of more down-to-Eart h musicians!! 1992 was a good year!
See them @ the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano ca on the 29th!!
1985 hot and sweaty in a Phoenix club, dancing to Fishbone, Live Baby! Ahhh, those were the days. Awesome jams, and the flippin owner tried to bail before he paid the boys. A-hole!
How is Mr. Bungle not on the Similar Artists list?
Party @ ground zero was on their 1985 EP-Fishbone:
Party at ground zero
A "B" movie starring you
And the world will turn to flowing
Pink vapor stew
gaberry32
can anyone say on what album was party at ground zero first recorded? i can't find it listed on pandora.
Truth and Soul is one of my desert island discs and resonates to this day. Fishbone kicks your butt up between your shoulder blades.
Fishbone Forever! Important cornerstone band. Just ask Red- Hot Chilli Peppers, Rage against the Machine, Limp Biscut, No Doubt, and a thousand other bands who got more credit then the godfathers of speed ska and funk/ rock fusion! Fishbone Forever! Best live band EVER!
mikefitz71
