Flotsam & Jetsam

Flotsam and Jetsam initially showed a lot of promise within thrash metal circles and, though they've continued to record over the past 15 years, their talent and professionalism never quite translated into significant sales or mainstream recognition. Formed in Arizona by vocalist Eric A. K., guitarists Michael Gilbert and Edward Carlson, bassist Jason Newsted, and drummer Kelly David-Smith, Flotsam and Jetsam were part of the second wave of thrash bands. After signing with Metal Blade Records, they recorded their rough, but ambitious 1986 debut, Doomsday for the Deceiver, which betrayed a huge Metallica influence. Ironically, the metal giants would soon recruit Newsted to replace bassist Cliff Burton, who had recently died in a tragic tour bus crash.

In another strange twist, Flotsam and Jetsam then signed with Metallica's label Elektra, for whom they recorded their second album, 1988's No Place for Disgrace, with new bassist Troy Gregory. Despite losing their principal lyricist and an important songwriter in Newsted (who was kind enough to leave a few contributions behind), the album managed to improve slightly upon their first and featured an interesting cover of Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting." Though the band supported the record by touring relentlessly, all their efforts barely made a dent in the now crowded thrash scene.

Switching to MCA, the band issued three more albums (1990's When the Storm Comes Down, 1992's Cuatro, and 1995's Drift) which sold progressively less and added little to their original thrash metal recipe. Bassist Gregory departed to join Prong after the first of these and was replaced by Jason Ward. Finding themselves back on Metal Blade, the band finally broke the mold (too little, too late) and recorded their most original album in 1997's High, the last to feature Gilbert and David-Smith. 1999's Unnatural Selection featured their replacements, guitarist Mark Simpson and drummer Craig Nelson. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi

What a great band I would so get one of their albums

I first became a fan when I saw them in Tucson at The Wildcat House (which is now closed) when I was a teenager...b e f o r e they got somewhat big. I still have the drumstick from Kelly-Smith. . . I have always loved this band and wondered why they never got the break they deserve...I love 'no place', which was my first album (still have the vinyl, as well as the cd) from these guys...but throw any album on by these guys and I'll crank it up just a bit more...
I first became a fan when I saw "Suffer the Masses" on Headbanger's Ball in about 1990. HIGHLY under-rated band!!!
Cuatro and Drift are easily 2 full albums that should be in every metal heads collection! This is timeless music that stand up against anything metal that has been released in the 30 years! The music is fantastic, Eric A.K. is a vocal God!
Doomsday for the Deceiver Rocks!
I liked these guys just as much as the Big 4 back in the day. When The Storm Comes was my favorite of all of their releases. Drift was a good one as well. They never made it into the Midwest except for Chicago, but sadly I was too young for my parents to let me drive there, and these were the days before GPS, so I wouldn't have any idea about how to get there either. So yeah, I'm still a little bummed that I've never seen them live.
FLOTSAM and Jetsam should have been on the big 4 BILL. THEY RULE AND ALWAYS HAVE.
Holy s**t just listened to n.p.f.d and cuatro back to back f**kin HEAVY WHY are these guys not more well known they have their very own sound so original
Undisputedly the most underated band from the thrash era complex, heavy , diverse. Their music changes album to album the way that metallica should have done
just sall yal in dallas texas yall where insane
Possibly the most underrated band of all time! Such a pity. Their music is absolutely awesome
Love this band! So underrated! First time I heard them was on a syndicated radio show called Metal Shop in the 80's.

Biker Bear is right the f*** on. SOOOOOO undervalued as a band.
our home town hero's !! well mine at least !
Drift and Quatro were two of the greastet technical metal albums ever made, And there latest stuff has some wonderfully dark tones and great Heavy Riffs. Need More F&J on here for sure!!!

P.S. This review sucks Jason Newstead had nothing to do with thier best work, why even mention him in the light they did.
To Karen Stickney: I know your post was 2 years ago but She Took an Axe was on the Doomsday for the Deceiver album.

Their most musically accomplished album by far was Cuatro.
i can not disagree with any of these posts drift was my favorite album of all time thank you f&j your efforts do not go unappreciate d
Flotsam is one of the most underrated acts of the metal genre. I like 'em, but if you are not into serious metal, there's always Lady Gaga...
bobnaiden71
great band, not as fast as there first few albums, esp after Newstead left.
wish these guys had been better. first 2 are great though
Sounds really f**kin' good to me!!!!!
blowngoats
Erik K is the one of the greatest and most under rated vocalist ever!!!
This review is bullshit. The best material created was after Jason Newsted. One of the most underrated bands of all time!!!
I wish Jason would do a reunion with them. I really hated the fact that he went to Metallica and was such a waste of talent. No Place for Disgrace ruled!
Doomsday for the Deceiver I think. I am blond...Lizz y Borden Song

I think they chose the name for the definition of "flotsam & jetsam".
What album is the song "She Took An Axe", which was written about killer Lizzie Borden, on?
Were Flotsam and Jetsam named for the eels in "The Little Mermaid"?
I'm in agreement with those who say they need more Flotsam and Jetsam on here.
apexman
Just saw them at the Galaxy Theater May 1st, huge performance as usual!! The did a lot of old s**t that night!
I would really like to see Doomsday, as well as No Place for Disgrace and When the Storm Comes Down made available. Why are they not available?
wrathchild2k 6 6 6

bottom line ...The most underrated.. . a n d taken advantage of band ever to form from thrash their last album was a work of art

Pandora needs to put more Flotsam on here. They can't just have 2 albums to listen to. No Place for Disgrace and Cuatro are my favorites. Please update this because F&J are just as good as Metallica or any other metal band out there!!!
Doomsday was such a masterpiece. . . Z i e g Hail!
can u guy put no place for disgrace
they are missing all of their albums, even their best (the first)
YEAAHHHH!!!! ! ! ! !
mrcaya
One of my all-time favorite thrash bands, right up there with Metallica if you ask me.
I would love to see Cuatro in this list as well, but these albums are fantastic. I'll take whatever F&J I can get!
One of the best underrated metal bands of all time!
The entire Cuatro album rocks. *Hint*
Wow! Will you update the discography?
