This all-star group -- comprised of keyboardist Bob James, guitarist Lee Ritenour, bassist Nathan East, and drummer Harvey Mason -- was formed in 1991 after the quartet came together on part of James' Grand Piano Canyon album. They have since recorded a number of CDs for Warner Bros. that have all been big sellers, not surprising considering the popularity of James and Ritenour. Larry Carlton took over the guitarist's spot in the late '90s, first appearing in Fourplay on the band's successful 1998 album, 4. The seasonal Snowbound was released in 1999. It featured traditional and modern holiday songs, all played in the quartets increasingly slick style. The band ended its tenure with Warner Bros. with 2000's soft babymaker album Yes, Please. Fourplay attempted to break new ground with with 2002s Heartfelt, which was their debut album for RCA's Bluebird imprint. The album consisted of live studio jamming that was heavily edited and assembled using Pro Tools. In 2004 they issued Journey, more a return to their earlier, smoother form than a building-block progression from Heartfelt. In 2006, Fourplay released X, a final album for RCA/Bluebird. The set featured a guest vocal from Michael McDonald on a reading of Steve Winwood's "My Love's Leavin'." The group signed with Heads Up International for 2008's Energy, which was was notable for a pair of excellent Carlton compositions and a vocal appearance by Esperanza Spalding on "Prelude for Lovers." Fourplay -- now featuring new guitarist Chuck Loeb replacing Carlton -- assembled again for the label on 2010's Let's Touch the Sky, which included guest appearances by Ruben Studdard and Anita Baker. ~ Scott Yanow & Thom Jurek, Rovi
I saw them at One World Theatre in Austin, TX with new member Chuck Loeb. They each signed my CD with a special Happy Birthday message. Incredible concert. Bob James is the king of jazz piano. Harvey Mason great vocals and muscian. Chuck Loeb was a great addition.

goosebumps all over listening to your fabulous music--I gave up television--now I'd rather listen to Pandora exclusively and forget renting movies. With so much violence, etc. I actually feel in such a more positive state of mind without pills or booze (well, maybe a little wine occasionally) Thank you for being you!!!!
I love these guys! If you missed the 1994 CD - Elixir is just one of their best. Thanks Pandora, i don't know what I would do without access to great music during my work day! LOL
I have listened to this group since the early 90's and they never stop making great music with a nice groove and easy feel I never get tired of. Bob James is the main man that I think makes this whole group work wonders.

Fourplay has been my favorite jazz group...It is what it is. Smooth with beats that will keep your your head bobbing. Bob James and his Super Group always at their Best! Totally Awesome!
Fell in love with the sultry sound of this group the first time I heard them. Such an amazing group. I love you guys for the serenity you give my every mood with your sound. Keep doing you.
Enjoyed "Fourplay" for a while, stopped buying their albums when too many tracks contained vocals. If I wanted to listen to vocals, I'd buy an album by "Manhattan Transfer", "The Swingle Singers", etc.
these guys are some of the best/famous studio musicians around. everybody wants them on there albums. they can choose who they want on vocals. PERFECTION
To me Fourplay put the Smooth in Smooth jazz. This band has and will alway be my favorite Group, can see anyone topping the sound.I have seen them in concert many many times and they never fail. keep doing what you do, and we will always love it." I NEED A LITTLE FOURPLAY"
