Freak Of Nature

Following the break-up of White Lion in 1991, frontman Mike Tramp (b. Michael Trampenau, 14 January 1961, Copenhagen, Denmark) assembled Freak Of Nature with guitarist Kenny Korade, bass player Jerry Best, drummer Johnny Haro and ex-VVSI/ House Of Lords guitarist Dennis Chick, a replacement for original member Oliver Steffensen. Away from record company pressures, the band developed a strong collection of melodic rock songs with a distinctly harder edge than White Lion, with Tramp concentrating on introspective, personal lyrics, again in contrast to the simpler themes of his previous group. ‘92’ dealt with a traumatic year in Tramp’s personal and professional life, while ‘Rescue Me’ tackled the difficult subject of his brother’s addiction problems. While acquiring recording contracts for Europe and Japan, Freak Of Nature had trouble finding a contract for the USA owing to their unwillingness to compromise. However, they were prepared to be patient and to let their music and growing live reputation break the band.

A lengthy touring schedule, taking in the USA, Japan and Europe, from May 1993 made the band many friends, and served to reinforce the idea of Freak Of Nature as a band rather than a Tramp solo project. Late 1994 saw the introduction of new guitarist Marcus Nand in place of Kenny Korade, shortly after the completion of the band’s second album Gathering Of Freaks. The band ground to a halt shortly afterwards. Tramp went on to release solo albums before reviving White Lion at the end of the decade.
