A South African Afro-fusion band, Freshlyground came together in Cape Town in 2002. Led by singer Zolani Mahola, and featuring Simon Attwell on flute, mbira and harmonica, Peter Cohen on drums, Kyla Rose Smith on violin, Julio Gugs Sigauque on acoustic guitar, Josh Hawks on bass guitar and Seredeal Shaggy Scheepers on keyboards and percussion, Freshlyground blended traditional kwela and African folk with jazz, blues and an indie rock sensibility into a distinctive and refreshing style and sound. The group released a debut album, Jika Jika, in 2003, following it with Nomvula in 2004, Ma Cheri in 2007, and Radio Africa in 2010. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi
This band is really inspiring to me. They are so beautiful, and reminds me there's hope for the world. They were revealed to me by my favorite teacher :-) I will always love them!

I was introduced to this phenomenal band last year. Love them!
I truly, truly, and really HEART FRESHLYGROUN D :-) And to think I discovered them by chance a year ago! It has been an awesome journey discovering their music since then. I only knew bout reggae and calyso coming from the Caribbean then soul, R&B, and hip hop having grown up in NY. But now I know I also LOVE AFRICAN MUSIC thanks to them. I look forward to hearing more from them in the future ;-)
