Geddy Lee

Few hard rock bassists have been as influential as Rush's Geddy Lee. Born Gary Weinrib on July 29, 1953, in Toronto, his parents migrated from Europe to Canada and got his nickname "Geddy" from when his mother would try to pronounce "Gary" in her accent. Taking up bass as a teenager and influenced by the likes of the Who's John Entwistle, Cream's Jack Bruce, and Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones, Lee hooked up with guitarist Alex Lifeson and drummer John Rutsey to form the hard rocking trio Rush (Lee would also serve as the band's lead vocalist). Although the band would eventually find success and fortune as a progressive hard rock band, early on they were highly derivative of blues rock/Led Zeppelin, as their self-titled 1974 debut proved.

But when Neal Peart replaced Rutsey one year later, the band's sound and musical direction immediately changed. Gone were the long Zep-jams and in came technically demanding and challenging hard rock, complete with thought-provoking lyrics (courtesy of Peart) -- although Lee's high-pitched, Robert Plant-esque wail remained. After honing their sound on a few albums, the trio hit pay dirt with relentless touring and their 1976 sci-fi concept album, 2112. Each successive release outsold it's predecessor (such prog metal classics as A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves), and by 1981's Moving Pictures, Rush had become one of the biggest rock bands on the planet. Throughout the '80s, Rush explored more modern (almost new wave-ish) sounds, yet their massive fan base remained in tact -- with Lee's vocals becoming more restrained.

Rush cruised along throughout the '90s (returning to their earlier, organic hard rock sound with such releases as 1993's Counterparts), issuing successful albums and playing sold-out arena tours worldwide, until the band went on indefinite hiatus in 1997. To combat the downtime, Lee issued his first ever solo album in 2000, My Favorite Headache (who was joined by ex-Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron and ex-FM guitarist/violinist Ben Mink). Lee's influence on rock bass can be heard in the playing of such wide-ranging disciples as Primus' Les Claypool, Dream Theater's John Myung, and Metallica's Cliff Burton. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi

Contrary to popular opinion, I think Geddy's voice is incredible with the range it had and still has. There aren't too many bassists that sing lead vocals because it is very difficult to do and he has perfected that talent. Love him solo and especially with RUSH. The soundtrack of my life for 33 years helping me through my teen years and now through the teen years of my kids.
Love Geddy.. He is such a talented musician. .love Alex and Neal.. I guess that's why Rush is so great..
Geddy came from his GRANDMOTHER trying to say Gary, not his mother
Geddy Your voice has brought the World Closer to our Heart!!!!!

I come from Cleveland and from a very early age i have loved and been inspired from the three of you my whole life and i just want you and alex and neil how thankful i really am.
RUSH is #1 and the only thing from Canada that's worth a damn !!!!!
and mazel tov to Mr. Weinrib for non-standard key signatures, multiple modulations within the same song, musicianship par excellence and decades of longevity. thank you Canada and hooray for Jews who rock!!! I'm kvelling.... . . . .
sounds exactly like a Rush song w/ better guitars ;-)
Mr. Geddy Lee is Boss

Saw them in KC on the final stop of the Clockwork Angels tour with my 14 year old son, totally agree that Rush is the best band ever!
Saw the boys in Nashville in may, still the best band ever!!
Rush, twice in three days coming up! Vancouver BC on July 26th and Portland two days later! God's music at its finest :)
Where is the follow-up?
chrissy_timm y
Two more days and Rush in concert in Virginia Beach, VA. Can't hardly wait!!!!
Oh and to reply to jrcookie256 they were inducted to the HOF in 2012!!! finnally!
Lifeson solo effort was very hard to listen to...those guys are not that great as solo artisits they were destined to be a trio....shou l d stay that way...love them all, just sayin.
Sounds just like Rush to me but I guess that makes sense. Am curious how Lifeson's solo album sounds.
jrcookie256
Does anyone believe that they are not in the Rock Hall of Fame!!! there are sooo many less talented groups in there! Politics.... oh you bet! Their free-spirit and headstrong attitude of not caving into the media and status quo is the reason. Rush is the best!!
rdulleck
RUSH is still to this day, one of the best, if not THE best live bands I have ever seen. You cant say that many bands sound as good live as they do on their albums. However RUSH succeeds in this area in every way possible. If you haven't seen a RUSH show, make it a point to!! You will not regret it!!
Geddy & Alex both did solo albums during Rush's hiatus. This one is great and so is Lifeson's Victor. I wish Pandora would link that album to the Rush station as well.
didnt know geddy had solo
otps91
Lyrics were priceless on this album.

I believe that Geddy's voice peaked on Vapor Trails. It sounds better as he gets older. He has great range now.
otps91
This album was very well done.
Geddy made me pick it up, Flea helped me through it...
What an artist. What a group of artists that still ROCKS my world thirty years later.
The first time I saw Rush was the first time I became aware of them. They were the warm up band for Kansas. I did not like Geddy's voice. I thought man they would be a great band if they did away with the extremely high pitched voice of that singer. Man was I wrong, I agree Rush is probably one of the best prog-rock bands ever. Their earlier music is just as relavent today as it was in the 70's. Not only that but I really haven't heard anything that I didn't like. I really like watching them pla
i love rush...and all it stands for
zippaspiel4
Damn this guy has some pipes!
With Geddy on bass, Alex on guitar, and Neil on drums, the best three piece band ever. Geddy can still sing almost as good as he did 30 years ago
Glad to see Pandora found the greatest '80s picture to use for his pofile ;-)
With Rush. Without Rush. GL is a premier player in the business.
Compared to Good Charlotte??? ? Have they gone mad!!
RUSH--need I say more
I like his latest stuff most.
Geddy is a great bassist, and after seeing him perform I picked up bass.
live2rideaz
My all time favorite band.... RUSH....... One of a kind....
warthogger9
what a voice and what mad bass skillz, as well as foot pedals and synths and keyboards. the voice gets a little annoying after awhile though. but still.
mario.alce
good voice
This solo album was amazing - absolutely amazing. You can definitely hear the Rush overtones and hints of their classical melodies, but he did an outstanding job putting this project together and releasing a top-notch album. I think all those years of Neal writing the thought-prov o k i n g lyrics also rubbed off a litte on Geddy for this album. ;)
Geddy Lee is THE MAN!!!!!!!!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
