Though he can sing honky tonk, Gene Watson built a reputation for soulful ballads in the classic country tradition. Born one of seven children in Palestine, Texas, Watson married early and was working as an auto-body man when he began frequenting the clubs in Houston. He recorded for a few small-time regional labels like Wide World and Stoneway during the early '70s. Watson finally had success in 1974, when a steamy single for Resco -- "Love in the Hot Afternoon" -- was picked up for national distribution by Capitol Records, igniting a firestorm of national hits: "Where Love Begins," "Paper Rosie," "Farewell Party," "Should I Come Home (Or Should I Go Crazy)," and "Nothing Sure Looked Good on You." In 1982, shortly after moving to MCA, Watson recorded his only chart-topper, "Fourteen Carat Mind." A parade of Top Ten entries followed during the early '80s, including "Speak Softly (You're Talking to My Heart)" and "You're Out Doing What I'm Here Doing Without." Between 1993 and 1997 Watson released four albums on the independent label Step One: Uncharted Mind, Good Ole Days, Jesus Is All I Need, and A Way to Survive. Four years later From the Heart was issued on RMG Records, followed by the 2005 Koch release Gene Watson...Then & Now. In a Perfect World appeared on Shanachie Records in the summer of 2007. Watson continued his signature brand of traditional country with 2009's A Taste of the Truth, which featured guest spots from Rhonda Vincent, Alison Krauss and Trace Adkins. Watson and Vincent released an all-duets album, Your Money and My Good Looks, on UMM Records in 2011. Watson's classic sides were owned and controlled by the various corporate labels he recorded for over the years, so to mark his 50th anniversary as a recording artist in 2012, Watson released Best of the Best: 25 Greatest Hits on his own Fourteen Carat Music label, faithfully re-recording his hits and making them, in a sense, finally truly his. ~ David Vinopal & Steve Leggett, Rovi
I (Richard Gonzalez) was working at Joes Trading Post in Houston Texas (Wholesale Tool Co) and we were sitting down eating lunch and in walked in Gene Watson and one of the guys (the owner son Jimmy Morris) asked hey aren't you Gene Watson and Gene replied yes I am. He was so down to earth and was so kind it was aweosme. Later on that year I went to a event in Houston and Bamm there was Gene Watson and his band playing in front of thousands of people, How awesome is that.

I saw him several in and around houston in the 80's. my favorite was the prison rodeo at huntsville in 86. He shared the stage with charlie mcclain. It was totally awesome. When he was a young, struggling musician he used to get gas at the service station my father in law worked at. Early 70's i would say. Gene watson is one of my favorites.

He came to my small hometown last fall and didn't get to go, but I heard it was standing room only by show time!!
I was lucky enough to see Gene Watson at the Florida Strawberry Festival in Plant City this past Friday, March 1st, 2013. My husband and I drove my mother up from Fort Myers (Lee County) to the festival and Gene's show. My mother is now 85 and still idolize's him! I enjoyed it as much as she did, and Gene could not have sounded any better... :)
I would love to see Gene Watson come to Carlisle or Hagerstown. HE IS BY FAR MY FAVORITE ARTIST, HE REALLY REACHES MY HEART WITH HIS MUSIC. I would love to meet him in person.
One of the greatest sounds of good ol country music, he's at the top of the list, in my book, would like to see one of his concerts in Ohio, Keep the Great Songs a coming, ans still enjoy the old too.
SORRY FOR THE BOOK BELOW, But I Wasn't finished, I have met a whole list of other fantastic artist. I hope to meet you someday. I can count my Best Favorites on one hand. The other hand you got it all. Thanks Buddy. Tony T from Bakersfield

I always did love listening to Gene. His music is so simple, but it usually tells a story and isn't like today's country-rock crap.

One of the great regrets of my life is that I missed meeting Gene at Jimmy Doyles in the spring of 2000. I was trucking back then and when home for a wedding where I met my own future wife. I have still have never met Gene, but that pretty wife and I are moving to the Lonestar soon, and we're gonna find one of Gene shows and listen to REAL country music by a true country music legend.

Love Gene,, have an old pink t-shirt he has signed two different times.. once at White County Fair in Searcy, Ar and at Jimmy Doyle night club in North Little Rock, Ar.
One of four or five country singers whose vocal style is so smooth that it makes it seem so easy, almost effortless, for anyone to duplicate. They don't though, because they can't. He, Merle Haggard, George Jones, and Vern Gosdin, are the ones I turn to when I really need to hear country music vocals done right.

You never hear any information about him except his Bio. Never what he is doing today or is he still married to his first wife. Do any of his children play music etc...
The most underrated country singer. He's had a sh*tload of hits but you hardly hear about him in country news. Gene is near the top in all time best country voices.

14 Carat Mind couldn't possibly have been recorded in 1982, because our local radio station was playing it in late 1981. Get your facts straight, Vinopal..
