The Gentrys got their start in Memphis, TN, in 1963. The original group was made up of seven members: vocalist Bruce Bowles, saxophonist Bobby Fisher, vocalist Jimmy Hart, trumpet player Jimmy Johnson, bassist Pat Neal, vocalist Larry Raspberry, and drummer Larry Wall. Their debut album, Keep on Dancing, climbed into the Top 100 due to the success of the title track. The group enjoyed minor success until 1966, when the band broke up. Originally, member Jimmy Hart decided to resurrect the band in 1969, now featuring himself on lead vocals. The band still had some minor success, but did not last long. Raspberry would go on to start several more garage and soul groups, while Hart became a popular wrestling character, the "Mouth of the South," and would write music for both the WWF and WCW wrestling organizations. ~ Bradley Torreano, Rovi
the lead singer on the original was larry raspberry. larry raspberry and the highsteppers is the BEST unknown band you'll EVER listen to. they are solid from beginning of set to end of set and the music is just plain good time music. wish pandora would get some here. the album high steppin and fancy dancin is a GREAT PARTY album!!!!!
From the voice, it sounds to me like the "Mouth of the South" was the lead singer! This isn't that unusual, wasn't Hulk Hogan a later-day member of Blues Image (famous for "Ride Captain Ride")?
"Southbound Train"--now who did this first? The Gentrys or Mountain? Either way, it seems like an extremely rare cover to do, amazing that either band heard about it--it's not like "Train Kept a Rollin'"
The description of this group leaves soooo much out. They were at their best when some of the originals left the group and they picked up some real musicians. Larry Butler, Ronnie Moore, Mike Garner, Bruce Bowles,Larry Raspberry and Larry Wall. These guys were great and I wish I knew what ever happen to them.
