Gershwin was able to capture so much in his music. I remember hearing Rhapsody in Blue the first time as a boy and I imagined it was the personal soundtrack for anyone walking in New York City. It sounded busy, energized and purposeful. I know that is more than a bit romantic, but he delivered this image to a Minnesota farm boy who wanted to see other places and live a different life. Somehow he gave me a taste of life in the big city.

Like others below I fell in love with Rapsody as a child playing my Dad's 45rpm records. I think it was a set of 3 or 4 platters. Paul Whiteman' s arrangement with Gershwin ( I think) on piano. That is my standard for Rapsody (right or wrong) but I adored hearing this version with the tempo at times faster than Whiteman's. This one seems smoother but man do Gershwins fingers fly. I would like to spend an evening listening to those 30 version. Thank you Mr. Gershwin.
I have about 30 versions of Rhapsody in Blue, including several by Georgr Gershwin himself. He was the greatest American composer I've ever heard. I also heve numerous versions of the Man I Love, One of the greatest songs ever written. It's a shame it'd a woman's song. Stan

I liked the short bio version of Gershwin

How do you only have a "short" bio of the greatest American composer?
I love love love Gershwin, and Rhapsody in Blue is my all time favorite piece of music. If you can't hear it on here, itunes, youtube, record store, there are ways to hear it :)

its annoying that they don't play rhapsody in blue.... but nonetheless, gershwin is still an amazing composer!
Scott Joplin and Hoagy Carmichael all dressed up in a 'Brooks Brother's' suit - and Harvard educated. NO ONE did it like Gershwin - hands down (hey, I didn't call on you!)

Rhapsody in blue is track 5 on The Piano Rolls. I used it as a song seed and they haven't played it for me yet. It is irritating because I have heard of it but never heard it and want to.
More Gershwin! But really Pandora needs to add the composer information to songs, so we can find more of his music, not necessarily played by him, or any other composer for that matter.
