Holst's Mars, anyone?
I recognize that Pirates of the Caribbean came 3 years after this, but its hard to listen to this without wondering why they're playing pirate music in a movie about gladiators. Anyway, it clearly gets 5/5 stars.
Anyone else think of Star Wars at the very beginning? :P
"Father to a murdered son.
Husband to a murdered wife.
And, I will have my vengeance,
In this life or the next."
Absolutely magical!
This is my favorote movie!! And probably one of Hans best pieces!!!
You can so easily hear Pirates at about 5:40... Nice going Hans.
As much as I like this piece, it is a blatant rip off of Holst's Mars from The Planets.
Love this score and Russell Crowe was awesome.
My favorite score of ALL TIME! Wakes up my spirit, then has me meditating on my victory.
This is the Planets Symphony by Gustav Holst with a twist...
There's a section in this piece (around the middle) that is almost exactly like the Pirates of the Caribbean theme song.
Don't read this because it actually works. You will be kissed on the nearest possible Friday by the love of you life. Tomorrow will be the best day of your life. However if you don't post this you will die in 2 days. Now you've started reading so don't stop. This is so scary put this on at least 5 songs in 143 minutes. When done press f6 and your lover's name will come on the screen in big letters. This is so scary because it actually works

The true main theme of gladiator is, i think, the tune from now we are free. Listen closely, and you will hear it quite a bit
MASTERPIECE!
MAXIMUS!
A great track for a great movie
Great music to pump you up before a game
Maximus!!!!
Totally awesome music for the gym

Hey is totally borrowing from Holst's The Planets: Mars in Gladiator
you'll hear POTC around 5:45... (-:
Lots of people say Gladiator stole from Pirates of the Caribbean, but if anything it was the other way around (just by chronology). That style of theme was heard a few times in Gladiator, but Zimmer evidently decided he liked it and made it the MAJOR theme in POTC. To me that's a lot different from taking a film score you already made and sticking it in some other movie, just because you can't think of anything better.
Hans Zimmer is one of my favorite music composers of all time, so no knocking him people! :( He is a genius in the music world. :D I LOVE YOU HANS ZIMMER! :)
That's cause they were composed by the same person. Based on the below comments and some others, it seems that the director had some other poor man lined up to compose the music for Pirates, but at the last minute they switched it to Hans and his buddy Klaus Badelt.

Wow, this does sound like POTC. Not a bad thing (I love all of those movies), but the similarities are striking. Cool song, though.
Yeesh, these people are vicious about their musical opinions.

Will you remove your helmet and tell me your name. My name is Maximus Decimus Merudius. Commander of the Armies of the North. Loyal servent to the true emporer, Marcus Arulius. Father to a muredered son, husband to a murdered wife. And i will get my vengence in this life or the next. Love the movie. This quote is the first thing that came to my head when i was listening to this song :)
I took my earphones off for a few minutes without pausing my station, then when I put them on I thought it was on a Pirates track... then a few seconds later I realized it was Gladiator. Sounded like Zimmer straight up recycled a phrase of his music for Pirates!
sunnydayz56
The end sounds like The Pirates of The Caribbean!
This album influenced period film-making and soundtracks after it came out. Hans Zimmer is a genius - and multiple other recent soundtracks have been influenced by him.
I do hear the common POTC theme running through...wh e n I hear this, I think of POTC.
I don't hear much Pirates here, but I do hear a whoooole lot of Holst (which you can also hear bits of in Star Wars). I think Holst probably wouldn't mind, because now people are technically still hearing his stuff! :)
Eh, so Zimmer reused some of his stuff. So what? Writing a score for an epic film is probably a lot harder than it sounds! ;)
Robert, that's exactly what I thought I was hearing when this came on the radio... It sounds *incredibly* like Mars from the Planets, I don't know how I missed that before.
kylemlibby
Zimmer's Gladiator score seemes to have greatly influenced his scores on Pirates of the Carribeain (spell fail I know) or whoever wrote the score for that.
phoenixbeak
Hans Zimmer himself admits to lifting /Wagner/ for the "Battle" and "Barbarian Horde" themes. The self-plagiar m of Gladiator that really annoys me is the dramatic choir in "Am I Not Merciful" totally lifts from a /Backdraft/ theme--a Hans Zimmer album from 1991. And anyone who manages to get a copy of "The Power of One" (1992 and out of print due to copyright issues) basically heard a rough draft of "The Lion King" (1993). I like the comment of cshvill200: "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Before you bust Zimmer for knocking off POTC score, listen to Gustaf Holtz's Planets, Mars.
Classical musicians take it as a compliment when their musical ideas are used by others. R/R not so much.
That's what I'm saying.

cool pop
If Zimmer decides to use some of the theme from one of his earlier music, it's his decision. It's no worse than when a writer uses a character from a book more than once. Take Rick Riordan, for example. Nobody gets mad when he mentions his character, Percy Jackson, in The Red Pyramid, a completely different series from Percy Jackson and the Olympians. It is perfectly fine for him to do that. And, cshville2000 , technically they were arguing that Gladiator "stole" the theme from POTC.
cshville2000
So we do the math and Pirates "stole" from Gladiator. It's a bit of a shock when you first hear it. But hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. :)
narnianlampl i g h t e r
It transports you back to Rome! Amazing! That grandeur and glory and cruel beauty...
donhilla
its great!!!
russel crowe and hans zimmer totally made this movie!!!!!!! ! ! ! ! ! !
my fav!!!
maverick003_ c y b e r g u y
Um...why can't we all be friends?
Can you really be that ignorant? Hans Zimmer was the composer for both Pirates and Gladiator. Of course they're going to have similarities

That's what makes each composer unique, they always have a flow of music and Hans Zimmer is just one of those amazing composers. Think of John Williams. You can ALWAYS tell when it's him. .
maverick003_ c y b e r g u y
vbscript, I agree with your facts there, but many people commenting on the Gladiator tracks were saying that Gladiator's score stole themes from Pirates. This is impossible because Pirates debuted 3 YEARS AFTER Gladiator. That is the math people seem to forget to do.
ross018
maverick, the Pirates music took from the Gladiator music. No math required. Also, Klaus Badelt works for Hans Zimmer... He worked with Zimmer on the Gladiator score as well as the Pirates score. Originally a different composer (Alan Silvestri) was supposed to do the Pirates score, but Bruckheimer changed his mind and gave it to Zimmer's team at the last minute, leading to the rush job which involved borrowing music from Gladiator.
maverick003_ c y b e r g u y
Also, Klaus Badelt scored the first Pirates, not Hans Zimmer.
maverick003_ c y b e r g u y
Okay, let's get something straight here. Gladiator came out in 2000. Pirates came out in 2003. Do the math.
Oof! I didn't notice anything particularly recycled until right in the middle of the song. Then there's this Pirates theme with a few notes changed (the rhythms are even the same)!

He must have been conscious of the similarity.. . ? It seems like there must have been some reason for that much cut-and-past i n g .
Lmao he really recycled this! Oh Zimmer you actually do belong in a zimmer...a padded one!
ross018
Yeah, I was kinda disappointed when I first heard this and realized that Zimmer stole the Pirates music from himself. Also, a lot of the Gladiator music is very similar to Mars from Holst's The Planets. Both the Gladiator score and the Pirates score are good, though, even if they heavily borrow from other works.
