Hackensaw Boys

The Hackensaw Boys are an eight-man acoustic unit that combines the primitive strains of old-time mountain and string band music with modern-day sensibilities. In fact, the group has shared the stage with acts that range from experimental indie-rockers the Flaming Lips to hip-hoppers De La Soul. The roots of the Hackensaw Boys go back to late 1999 in Charlottesville, VA, when Dave Sickmen and Tom Peloso set out to form a group. At a gig by the similarly minded Old Crow Medicine Show, the two met up with future primary members Robbie St. Ours (multi-instrumentalist) and Rob Bullington (mandolin). The four ended up on-stage and found they had immediate chemistry. Subsequently, the group played regular engagements around Charlottesville (including street busking and a residency at the Blue Moon Diner) as musicians moved through its ranks. At one point, the Hackensaw Boys consisted of a dozen players; by the time they got around to recording their debut album, Get Some, on reel-to-reel in the living room in 2000, it was a nine-man unit. Heading into their self-released sophomore album, 2002's Keep It Simple, the group had stabilized at eight players. ~ Erik Hage

Saw them last night, North Lake Tahoe, FREE show no less. Nobody knew, PR was quiet I guess. They broke the place down, it went from emptyish on a monday night to a moderate sized crowd making a giant sized ruckus and having a giant sized good time. They are so damned good and I love their sound and energy. I will never miss a show. They are one of the best string bands out there now. I listen to sweet petunia at least three times a day.

The Boys actually played at a small summer concert series our city holds at a local park. I was blown away by their creativity, musicianship and freshness. I love the home-made rhythm contraption. Even though they're young, they have that real authentic old-timey feel and their songs incorporate traditional and new influences. They should be bigger than they are.

Saw the Boys winter '07 in Petoskey, MI and they pretty much gave a jaw dropping performance. Strangely this was my first exposure to the band but they immediately became a personal favorite. The show was small enough to meet them after and share some libationary tale telling. Truly enjoyed their company. Love What You Do has some terrific song writing.

Couple years ago I saw them open up for Cake in Atlanta, GA. I never had seen heard of them, but they immediately blew the roof off the place. After Cake played, my girl and I both agreed Cake should have been the opening act. As previous comments say, deff incredible live, even if this isn't really your 'style' music.

Recently the Hackensaw Boys played at The Brick Tavern in Roslyn, WA and were so much fun, AWESOME is a great word to describe their show. Lots of enthusiasm, broken strings (re-strung on the fly) and great music was completed with an off stage accoustic closing. If you get the chance go see them. Their album Look Out is absolutely wonderful.

These guys came to play at Virginia Tech and had a small crowd, but played their hearts out! They were absolutely incredible!
