Following their formation in 1993, Hammerfall underwent numerous personnel changes before settling on their current lineup, which includes principal songwriters Joachim Cans (vocals) and Oscar Dronjak (guitars). In Flames skinbeater Jesper Stromblad contributed to their debut, although Patrick Rafling replaced him soon after. Since the release of their debut Glory to the Brave in 1997, Hammerfall have become one of the toasts of the Eurometal scene, residing in Germany's Top 100 for over two months, with Glory dubbed Album of the Year by Rock Hard magazine. The Swedish rockers have also played numerous metal fests, including the Wacken Open Air Festival; they returned in 1999 with the EP I Want Out. Renegade was issued a year later. ~ Bryan Reesman, Rovi
these guys are some of the best but I must say Dragonland is better no offense meant to diehard hammerfall fans just Dragonland has a bit more melodic version of powermetal but either way these guys will forever live in my heart
Awesome band. Been listening to them since 2006 (wish i found them earlier) and they immediately became my favorite....they are great live as well! Saw them in NYC and they were flawless
Id say you think of war because many of their songs are about war. Ex: Genocide, Steel Meets Steel, Any Means Necesary. It's a common theme with power metal and metal in general.
@ tuprowm: 1. I had nvr seen the TV series when I wrote that post. Only had read four of the books. 2. Yes, it's a Brotherhood, the Brotherhood of the Night's Watch. The Black Brotherhood, it's called IN THE BOOKS.
@ Max Derembourg: One, it's not a brotherhood at all, it'r the night's watch... Two, take stuff more from the book than the TV series, Anything that has been made into film from a book has been edited.
First time hearing them, and they sound amazing. It is like a mix between Dio, Metallica, and some other modern-day metal bands. This band, Hammerfall, really amazes me. I love all sorts of music, preferably the heavier stuff like Disturbed, Five Finger Death Punch, and that sort, but this band is great. I am surprised I have never heard of them until now.
This album was released in 2005, Take the Black is a phrase often used in the 2000 book series (now also HBO series) Game of Thrones. Taking the Black is what they call leaving society to join an ultra-elite guardian force the Black Brotherhood, who spend their entire lives guarding the Wall separating North from South, keeping humanity protected from the monsters of the North. Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken is ALSO a line from the GOT books, its the motto of one of the lordly families. FYI.
Why is this bio so short? I've seen very small bands with the same length.... This is the first time I've been disappointed in pandora. This was the band that got me into power metal because I kept hearing their name and finally had to check em out. They're like the band I think of when it comes to power metal.
HammerFall has a mythic epic sound to it. that kind of metal is rare nowadays. we should enjoy it while we have the chance. and then we should make more of it! the fate of metal depends on us!
They sound WAY too much like Helloween, leaving with something less than an original sound. I think they would have benefitted with a bit heavier vocals.

Great Band! I am just discovering this genre. Through Helloween Pandora.
bum_ination100 keep them in the underground where record companys can't take to strong of a hold on them.

These guys are damn good and should have more publicity than they do. In all honesty, and to my shame, I did not know of these before I started my Dragonforce Radio station.
