The Hawaiian duo Hapa teamed singers/guitarists Barry Flanagan and Kelii Kanealii, who first met in 1983; deriving their name from a pidgin slang expression for "ethnically mixed, " Kanealii (a Honolulu native) and Flnagan (a product of New Jersey who relocated to Maui in 1979) then spent the next decade honing their distinctive sound, an update of traditional Polynesian textures and rhythms incorporating elements of pop and worldbeat. Building a devoted following throughout the islands, in 1993 Hapa issued their self-titled debut LP; the record was an unprecedented smash, breaking countless sales records on its way to earning six Na Hoku Hanohano awards (the Hawaiian equivalent of the Grammys). The duo's popularity expanded beyond their home state as well, and they became the first Hawaiian act to appear at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival; a Christmas-themed release, Holidays, followed in 1995, and two years later Hapa returned with In the Name of Love, highlighted by a cover of the U2 hit which lent the record its name. Surf Madness, their second release of 1997, soon followed. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi
Living in Honolulu I am surrounded by trad. Hawai'ian music esp. in Waikiki. Never get tired of Hapa, bought their first album in 1993 and have been a fan ever since!
missing home like i cant believe i feel like going home eating my poke and poi drinking my heine and sitting back and relaxing on the shores of Nanakuli!!!
Celeste might be on to something. I recall that the original duo parted ways, but Barry is working with another talented kama'aina and Hapa continues to thrive.
Please update this bio page. Seems to be way out of date...

Just saw the boys at the MAC last weekend at the dedication of the new pavilion. Willie K wrapped up the night and rocked everybody out! A Hui hou! Malama Pono!
From New Jersey. Enjoying beautiful melodious Hawaiian music on Pandora Radio. Love harmony and melody and love Hawaiian music. So sorry to learn that IZ is no longer with us. What a powerful voice. Keali Reichel is A+ with me and soooo handsome. By the way, I am 67 years old and can still appreciate a nice looking man. Would love to see Keali on tour in concert.

We first saw this duo in Maui at the Kapalua Bay Hotel while having a drink on the veranda. I fell in love with their music and have purchased many of their albums but my prize possession is the tape I bought from them as we were leaving. I can almost sing along with them. Wonderful music.
