The Happy Goodmans

For nearly four decades, the Happy Goodman Family brightened the world with their gospel songs. They were founded in Alabama in the 1940s by Howard and Gussie Goodman. Over the years, they expanded and changed membership until finally becoming a quartet composed of Ruth, Sam, Rusty and Bob Goodman. They were later joined by Vestal Goodman and the only non-Goodman, tenor Johnny Cook. The family was most successful during the 1960s and '70s; in 1968, their album The Happy Gospel of the Happy Goodmans won a Grammy for Best Gospel Album. The following year, Vestal received a Dove Award for Female Vocalist of the Year. The Happy Goodmans were some of the first members of the TV show The Gospel Singing Jubilee, which has won numerous Dove Awards. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

They are the great ones in my life time
And will always be remembered as a group that had the real thing in there hearts and lived it in a way you could see in there lives and the action showed it at all times everywhere they went
I think southern gospel music is the best music ever. I grew up in lancaster county, pa on a farm.every Saturday, Sunday or any evenings we watched on tv or listened to the radio we always had the goodmans on or a lot of others that sang that type of music but the Goodmans were the best

My husband was enthralled with Vestal. When he passed away 6 years ago, everyone in the family said that he would be singing with Vestal. He loved to sing and would sing along with the Goodman's when they were on or in concert. Our daughter would play their records while doing the dishes and sing along. I never cared how long it took her to do dishes as I loved to hear her sing.
Always watched the Gospel Singing Jubilee after milking and before church.
Great singers and even better family! Gone but never forgotten.
Great station!

The Gospel Singing Jubilee was on every Sunday morning in our house growing up. I am sure that helped shape my love for Southern Gospel music.
I love this Gospel group
My first recollection of gospel music, was seeing Vestal Goodman sing on television. I would sit with my Grandmother on Sunday morning before church and watch them sing.
Oh that was some precious times!!!

I remember listening to the Happy Goodmans :When I was growing up and now one of the best groups that I loved so much:They are all gone home to Heaven:I know that Vestal Goodman is singing her heart out around the throne of God:
I really miss them all:
I remember sitting in the family room on Sunday afternoons watching the Happy Goodmans on the Gospel Singing Jubilee. IT was the best of times because when we were watching my father was not b**ching and complaining, he was actually happy and singing along. I still love southern gospel to this day! Elvis is the best gospel soloist and the Goodman's remain the best group to this day!

Love the Goodmans.
you can feel what they sing. Especially Vestal.
We are fortunate to have the ability to relive the music and voices through electronic media. My dad and I used to attend the "all night gospel sings" together. The Happy Goodmans were our favorite. Good memories...

Vestal Goodman has a unique and captivating voice. She really puts feeling in her songs. Unfortunatel y she is singing in a higher place now.
I remember seeing The Happy Goodman Family in concert in the late 60's with my father who also had a southern gospel group... Brings back wonderful memories...
