Harry Chapin

Harry Chapin's career as a popular singer/songwriter was cut short by an auto accident in 1981, yet he left behind a series of recordings that his fans continue to treasure decades after his death. Chapin was never a critically acclaimed singer/songwriter. Critics accused him of over-sentimentalizing his subjects and attaching heavy-handed morals to his socially aware story-songs; the heavily orchestrated arrangements that accompanied many of his songs didn't help his case with the critics, either. Nevertheless, Chapin earned a devoted audience during the '70s, through his music and his charity work as a social activist.

Chapin began performing while he was in high school, singing in the Brooklyn Heights Boys' Choir and forming a band with his brothers Tom and Stephen. During college, he decided to pursue a career as a documentary filmmaker; in 1968, he directed the Oscar-nominated Legendary Champions. In 1971, he switched his career, concentrating on music. Chapin recruited a backing band through an ad in the Village Voice; the respondents included bassist John Wallace, guitarist Ron Palmer, and cellist Tim Scott. The group began performing in various clubs around New York and the singer/songwriter was soon signed to Elektra Records.

Heads and Tails, Chapin's first album, was released in the summer of 1972 and became a success thanks to the hit single "Taxi," which soon became the songwriter's signature tune. Later that year, he released his second album, Sniper and Other Love Songs, which didn't fare quite as well as his debut. Short Stories, Chapin's third album, appeared in the spring of 1973; it spent 23 weeks on the chart due to the success of the single "W.O.L.D.," a story about the life of a disc jockey. After recording his fourth album, Verities and Balderdash, Chapin disbanded his backing band and began work on his musical The Night That Made America Famous; both Wallace and cellist Michael Masters worked on the show, along with guitarist Doug Walker, drummer Howie Fields, and Chapin's brothers Tom, Steve, and Jim. While he was working on the musical, Verities and Balderdash became his biggest hit, peaking at number four on the U.S. charts and becoming a gold record. The album's success was benefited by the number-one single "Cat's in the Cradle," a song about an inconsiderate, career-oriented father that was based on a poem written by Chapin's wife.

The Night That Made America Famous opened on February 26, 1975. It closed on April 6, after 75 performances; the show would earn two Tony nominations. Chapin won an Emmy award that spring for his contributions to ABC television's children's series Make a Wish, which was hosted by his brother Tom. That spring, the singer/songwriter co-founded World Hunger Year, a charity designed to raise money to fight international famine; the organization earned over $350,000 in its first year. In the fall of 1975, Chapin delivered Portrait Gallery, his follow-up to Verities and Balderdash. While the album performed respectably, peaking at number 53, it failed to recapture the mass audience of his previous album.

Greatest Stories -- Live, a double album released in the spring of 1976, became the singer/songwriter's second gold album, peaking at number 48. Chapin was becoming more politically active throughout 1976, as evidenced by his role as a delegate at that summer's Democratic Convention. Late in 1976, he released On the Road to Kingdom Come, which spent a mere six weeks on the charts. The 1977 double-album Dance Band on the Titanic was on the charts for a few more weeks, yet it didn't spawn a hit single. The following year, Chapin met with President Jimmy Carter, discussing the need for a Presidential Commission on Hunger; he also released Living Room Suite that summer, which peaked at number 133.

Chapin released a second live album, Legends of the Lost and Found -- New Greatest Stories Live, in the fall of 1979; it was his least-successful album, spending only three weeks on the charts. In 1980, he signed with Boardwalk Records, releasing Sequel that fall; the title track of the album was a sequel to his first hit single, "Taxi," and became his last Top 40 hit.

On July 16, 1981, Chapin was driving to a business meeting on the Long Island Expressway near Jericho, NY, when his car was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer. The accident caused his gas tank to explode, killing the singer/songwriter in the process. A memorial fund was established in his name following his death, with Elektra Records providing the initial donation of 10,000 dollars. Over the years, the fund has raised an estimated $5 million, which has gone to a variety of social causes that were close to Chapin's heart. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Outstanding artist gone way to soon....
When they are gone, you will remember every single opportunity you had to speak them. And didn't.

Cat's in the Cradle.

Harry was the first concert I ever went to. His brother Tom was the warm up act. He played for a while. Then Harry joined him and the two of them played several songs. Then his brother Steve and the rest of the group came out and began what would be about a four hour concert. Imagine my surprise when I later went to other concerts and learned that no one else did much more than an hour and a half concert. I think he played every song he had. This was in 1975. I had only heard of Cat's in the Cra
I have listening to Harry since 1972,saw him many times. My Daughter listens to him and she is 30. We will never have another man like him,he is one for all the ages.

I still have the ticket he autographed for me.....we lost him way too soon!

I saw Harry Chapin in Cleveland, Ohio before he was 'famous'. He came out out into the audience of about 50 attendees and was so gracious. To this day, I love his music!
Harry was great! saw him in concert many times and was devastated at his passing. Now, My daughter has become friends with his daughter, a talent in her own right, her huband and beautiful boys. Now, when Jenn comes in the area to perform, I have the pleasure of watching Harry's grandbabbies . . . . h e would have enjoyed them soo much!
I will never forget one of his concerts in Long Beach,Ca. I used to go to see him any time in California. He started off the concert saying he sold out as he had just played Las Vegas the night before. He said he was gonna sing his a** of and he did. After two and a half hours took a break and came back for another 45 minutes or so. Then as already mentioned he was out front signing autographs and visiting. I feel fortunate that I did buy his book of poetry and signed by him back in 1975.
He held the audience in the palm of his hand just by singing his songs and being him. He always sang his heat out and would stay and sign autographs and talk to his fans until all were ready to leave. I loved his concerts and still miss the guy.
Cats in the Cradle.... Man i love this song...when u get into the lyrics its incredably moving!

Incredible music and simply put, a good man who left us too soon. Was so fortunate to see him sing. Still moves my soul.

I only know that he touched my heart with his music. I never saw him and he was dead before I knew he was alive which saddens me. Thank you Harry
Way too preachy. Go give a sermon to your abortion performing father.
Harry belonged to a small circle of gifted artists who unfortunatel y were lost to time long before they reached their apex; -Their lives snuffed out prematurely without sharing all that they had to try teaching us....... Croce ,Denver, Lennon, Fogelburg, and a very few others; - together with Chapin, - as singer songwriters, musician storeyteller s , they are a league of their own. There are too few with the talent/abili t y & courage/pass i o n today whose repitoure and message wiil have the impa

Daniel, Harry Chapin also recorded a hit song Cat's in the Cradle. This might be why you are associating Hary Chapin with Cat Stevens.

I originally thought this song was written and recorded by Cat Stevens. I checked youtube and there aren't any videos of him actually singing this song. Did he sing a cover of this song ever?

Need we say more! .TAXI is epic His music is timeless
Harry Chapin is one of the very few truly great singer/songw r i t e r s who tell meaningful, touching stories in their songs, and one of the few who can touch my heart and make me cry. The songs he wrote and recorded 35 years ago are just as touching, just as poignant, and just as true now as they were then. As long as we have his music, we will always have Harry.
MY OTHER FAVORITE HARRY.
A Better place to be always moves me to tears.
One of our times greatest story tellers

was so moved by A Better Place To Be we had a plaque/sign made and it is still in a place of prominance in our home. His music is so personal, intent, feeling. A great man gone!!

Listening to Harry Chapin was a family tradition and still is. I love now sharing his must with my children. My parents, siblings and I were all in the car together when we learned of his death. We were all sobbing! I was 4 at the time and didn't really understand, but cried anyway!
been listening since i was 5 now 21 still remember the heartfelt feelings his music gives

I was as a student attending Montgomery Community College, Rockville MD in the fall of 1980 when Chapin came to our campus to campaign for some local congressman. We tried to convinced our Linear Algebra professor, who didnn't know who Harry Chapin was, to let us skip class - You don't know who Harry Chapin is we exclaimed... . so he closed his book and said well let's go find out. I may not have agreed with all his politics, but the moment and music are a great memory! RIP Harry!!
I don't appreciate the critical nature of what's written about him. He wrote songs that made you think and feel. Nothing wrong with that. Cats in the Cradle alone has kept me on course with raising my children --- and probably the parents of countless others.

My brother and I went to the old Paramount in Portland Or. in the late 70's and saw Harry. I was so impressed he stayed until the last fan left, talking and joking. My brother said that was probably the best concert you'll every see he was right.
A great man and artist!

I have loved Chapins' songs since first hearing them in the early 70s; the man was awesome! The critics were ill tempered regarding Chapin's work, lyrics and musical arrangements , including orchestratio n s , were nothing less than incredible!

Could you imagine if he was around today? Miss you Harry
I did not know Harry's music when he was alive as I was a teenager when he died and I was in to rock n roll. When I got to college a friend turned me on to him. I love his music. Cats in the Cradle really touches the heart especially now that I have a son.

To Harry Chapin's family, my sister was dying of a brain tumor, she could not make his concert due to a high fever which put her back in the hospital Harry Chapin came to the hospital to see her, she was so so so sick, but looking at her you would have never known it. She was smiling, laughing, just so happy. Thank you Harry for making a dying girl's dream come true. I hope that you are both in Heaven singing all those wonderful songs together! Thank you !
Greatest story teller . Used to hear Sniper on WBCN in the early 70's ,when it was a real underground radio station. Love all his songs . He is deffinately missed.
I also was fortunate to see Harry twice. Once he performed at the old Mosque < Richmond, Va.> and afterwards, as raspy as his voice was, he still hung around to sign autographs and kiss babies. He is definitely missed very much but never forgotten.

I was fortunate to see Harry perform 7 or 8 times. The best was in Pine Knb, MI where he preformed two nights back to back. He preformed for a total of 9 hours, never repeating a song. He was a master storyteller. Harry is gone but not forgotten. His music lives on today.
I remember my folks connecting the stereo to the tv and tape recording his concert specials and just growing up with his music after the accident. His music is just that timeless.

1981....was it really that long ago? Another lifetime.... b u t the music still speaks as eloquently. Also love Taxi, with that amazing ethereal vocal.
The man!!!

I had the pleasure of seeing Harry Chapin perform several times while a student at the University of Illinois. He came and performed on campus every year at a charity dance marathon one of the fraternities held annually. I've always enjoyed his music but I also had a more personal encounter with him one summer.

I spent my summers in those days working as a vendor at the Cubs and Sox games in Chicago. One day I had several people around me and was taking care of them one by one. I finally g
I was planning to see him in concert the week following his death and always regretted not seeing him live. His songs touched my heart. The critics blew it on his music and should have recognize him more for what he accomplished . I bet today they might with all the crap that fills the airways. I consider him one of the last great true folk singers. he touched my life and his songs held meaning for me at various times in my life since the 70s and continue to do so.

My wife and I saw Harry in Chicago 35 years ago. Liked him then, and still do.

I was fortunate to work backstage at about five of his shows in and around Scranton Pa. Harry was always down to earth and made time to speak with everyone, even me- a 17 year old kid working backstage hospitality. He was known for his social causes , but I remeber him as a very light hearted guy, quick to laugh and smile- 30,000 pounds of Bananas is still my favorite song of his.
I had the pleasure of seeing Harry about a dozen times, most of then at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in upstate NY. He was always gracious and kind to the audience, often walking into the crowd during intermission to talk and give autographs. His music was from his soul and touched many lives. God Bless you Harry.
i was in dallas-tex. that morning. i went to a cuurch. priest-say worry more about his family. i said i am his family, just trying to light a candle. can bearlly see, from the tears and the inheavev. the harry is the it.-harve. magic(harry) m a g i c ( m a g i c ( h a r r y ) e t c
I was a Harry Chapin fan ever since I heard Taxi for the first time. I was lucky enough to see him and he band live in Green Bay, WI. shortly before his death. WHAT A SHOW !! My wife was pregnant with my only son at the time and for some reason my son has become a HUGE Harry fan. Maybe he heard the songs when he was still in his mother's womb.
There was never anyone like him and I don't think there ever will be! Love you Harry! Hope you do concerts on the other side!

Can't get over how relevant his songs are today.
