Haven't We Met?

A pop and standards singer during his long career, Kenny Rankin debuted in 1967 with his first album, Mind Dusters, which featured the soft rock hit "Peaceful." Over the course of the early '70s, Rankin slowly built up a following with a steady stream of records and performances that balanced originals, new songs, and standards. As the decade drew to a close, he began to return to his singer/songwriter roots, particularly on After the Roses, his 1980 debut for Atlantic Records. He continued to perform during the '80s, but he only recorded sporadically. In 1991, he recorded a pair of albums, Hiding in Myself and Because of You, for two separate labels. Three years later, he signed with Private Music and released Professional Dreamer, an album that found him concentrating on standards. That record was followed in 1997 by Here in My Heart, which had a Brazilian flavor. Throughout the rest of the '90s, Rankin focused on touring and, in 1999, he issued The Bottom Line Encore Collection, his first live recording in two decades. ~ Scott Yanow & Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

I discovered Kenny rankin while attending college in Boston area in the late 70's. His beautiful, soulful voice and soothing rhythms have since then a part of my music listening. I had a chance to see him in California in the early 90's. Shortly before he passed away, I was in New York for a meeting and I passed the Blue Note club which displayed a "one night only" evening with Kenny Rankin. You can imagine that I ditched everything and spent that evening in his presence. Still makes me sm

Love this man's music. Only got to see hm twice in concert. He was a genius at scatting in his own unique way and a genius at improvising his voice and putting a whole new spin on a song where u didn't even recognize it. Left us too soon. I listen to him to this day EVERYDAY. Never get bored with his music. RIP Kenny. We love u .

Kenny Rankin graced the stage many times at The Boarding House in San Francisco, where I worked at while attending UC Berkeley. I feel blessed to have known him. Not only was his voice and music mesmerizing beyond belief, he was also a great guy. We all looked forward to his appearances. I caught him once in St. Louis a few years back at a small venue in a hotel. His pipes were still are strong as they were back then. I was so saddened to hear of his passing. Sail on. my friend.

I was fortunate to see Kenny Rankin perform live 5 times in my life. His talent for writing and performing his own compositions was matched by his gift for placing his unique interpretati o n s of musical standards. Kenny made songs you'd heard before new and fresh with his vocal styles. Like all great entertainers he was able to transport an audience during a live concert with music and stories into place where you loved the music even more than before you spent two hours together.

He was one of many jazz vocalists known in those regions of the USA where they performed often and were greatly appreciated . . . yet who seldom made a national impression. May he rest in peace...

I listened to his albums over and over again in the 70's and saw him perform in Dayton, OH in a small auditorium. I just started enjoying him once again on Pandora and just NOW discovered he had passed away 3 years ago! Yes, he was highly under appreciated, but thankfully, his music lives on.

A superb talent. Very original, very touching. Never understood why he wasn't appreciated by more folks. But his legacy lives on...listen to John Proulx, Matt Belsante, et. al.

Rankin is about as good as one can get. A tremendously gifted writer and singer. He captured my ear decades ago. He has always been one of my favorites, and he think he was greatly underestimat e d through the years. Miss him? Terribly. Watch his performance DVDs if you can. Amazing. Paul W.
