Henri Vieuxtemps (1820-1881) was a French violin virtuoso and composer, famed for his technical innovations and prowess in performance. Most of the music he composed featured his instrument, including seven violin concertos, romances, a Fantasia Appassionata, and other short concert pieces, as well as a Cadenza for Beethoven's Violin Concerto. Stylistically, Vieuxtemps' music is sweetly Romantic and sentimental, which made it quite popular in its time. He toured widely, from Europe to the United States and Russia, but his career was effectively ended in 1873 when a stroke disabled his right arm. Vieuxtemps' best-known student was Eugène Ysaÿe. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi
