Pianist and composer Hiromi Uehara was born in Shizuoka, Japan, in 1979. At the age of six she started playing piano. Within a year, she was a student of the Yamaha School of Music, whose progressive approach to musical training allowed the young student to shape her technical skills, writing, and performing. After relocating to the United States in 1999, she continued her studies at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, where she received a full scholarship. It was there that Hiromi developed her varied musical taste, encompassing everyone from J.S. Bach to Sly & the Family Stone. While at Berklee, she also had the opportunity to play with jazz piano legends Oscar Peterson, Chick Corea, and her mentor, Ahmad Jamal. In 2003, Hiromi recorded her first disc, Another Mind, on the Telarc label, produced by Jamal. Brain was released a year later, followed by the pianist's third trio album for Telarc, Spiral, in 2006. For her next album, Hiromi augmented her trio with avant-fusion guitarist Dave Fiuczynski, releasing Time Control in early 2007. Beyond Standard, a thematic continuation of Time Control, was also recorded with her Sonicbloom trio and released a year later. The solo piano set Place to Be followed in 2010. ~ Al Campbell, Rovi
just watched one of your shows in Boston the best sound I have heard in a long time. And I got to meet Hiromi in person and got a signed CD sweet thanks so much. Wish you much success. from the Meireles Family
Nice comments, and well deserved, except the nostalgic guy that's upset because she isn't stuck in whatever past period he's stuck in, which he's calling traditional jazz. Thank goodness she chose Chick's departure instead of joining the other risk-free players of nostalgia jazz. She is fantastically gifted, as performer, composer and bandleader. Keep tearing it up girl! We LOVE you; I can't wait to see you with the trio! Your music is more uplifting to me than words can describe!

snapplefact 2704: Hiromi was beaten and whipped until she play good from a young age
I love the fact is carries on the traditions of jazz with such talent and at such a young age, I am so glad I found her. Watch the I've Got Rhythm video on You Tube...AMAZING.
I saw Hiromi, Stanley Clarke and Lenny White at Blue Note. Inspirational.

This gal is arguably the best pianist that ever was. Her skill level is of course fabulous but If you study some of those You Tube vids....she not only can play different melodies with each hand but different timing as well. Absolutely stunning talent....hope the industry doesn't ruin her.

Going to see her at Yoshi's with Anthony Jackson and Simmon Phillips this week.

I'm as in love with her as the rest of you are. Wow.
Stanley Clarke, Lenny White and Hiromi in the Blue Note in NY - one of the more memorable concerts I listened to. And I have listened to a few in my life...

Saw her for the first time last night at the Summer Stage in Central Park featured with the Stanley Clarke Band and she truly rocked the park away! I'm looking forward to seeing more of her any chance I get.
Hiromi is an amazingly creative and innovative composer and artist. Her progressive and hard-driving style make for energetic enjoyment of this audio art addition to all that is spontaneous and new. I could listen to hours and hours of her music and never tire. More, more, and then some!
First time I have heard this ladies piano. Very flowing and confident. She's compared with Marcin Wasilewski. WOW! that's a big jump. I must hear more...
Dear Hiromi: You have chosen Chick's departure from traditional jazz. I'm sure there is an audience of spaced out listeners who nod their head to the beats created, but can't remember your name in the morning. Please come back home before you are nothing but a memory of what once was.
I love her music so much. She's just amazing. I've seen her perform in Yoshi's in Oakland and I came back the next night again. Hiromi, we would love to see you in Israel.
