Hiroshima

Hiroshima, a group whose music falls between R&B, pop, world music, and jazz, has long had its own niche. The band integrates traditional Japanese instruments into their musical blend and has generally been both commercial and creative within its genre. Hiroshima's founding members are keyboardist Dan Kuramoto (who also played shakuhachi), June Okida Kuramoto on koto (a key part of the group's sound), Johnny Mori on taiko drums, and Danny Yamamoto on drums, percussion, and taiko. Other additions include keyboardist Kimo Cornwell, bassist Dean Cortez, and singer Teri Koide (who was later succeeded by Kimaya Seward). Some of the musicians were descendants of Japanese Americans held in U.S. detention camps during World War II. Beginning with the band's self-titled 1979 debut, Hiroshima has recorded a series of best-selling albums for Arista, Epic, and Qwest, and although they have evolved over time (moving further away from jazz), they have managed to not only retain but increase their popularity. Since 2000, the band has released a handful of albums including The Bridge in 2003, Spirit of the Season in 2004, Obon in 2005, and Little Tokyo in 2007. ~ Scott Yanow

I have recently just discovered Hiroshima, and I instantly fell in love with their work. I honestly can't begin to explain how much of an impact their music has made on my artwork, and just overall helping me be at ease. Their music really does take you to different places of your heart, making you feel differently within each song. I wish I had discovered them sooner. They're really a marvel, and I will treasure their music. I could ramble forever about it. It's time to binge all their songs!!

I have long since wished for the opportunity to work with and meet this group of talent. I have never in my circle of music ventures heard of any one venue with them featured and think more exposure would definitely give the world a taste that will leave them craving more as I have. Maybe its may culture environment that has not caught on give me some insights please!

Manzanar, the name of 1 of many re-education camps that Japanese-Ame r i c a n s were relocated to just after Pearl Harbor was attacked. The picture of the bridge on the album cover is the bridge which was the target for the first atomic bomb, dropped on Hiroshima, Aug. 1945.
