The woman behind hits such as Eminem's Love the Way You Lie and Fort Minor's "Where'd You Go," singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Skylar Grey (formerly Holly Brook) began singing at the age of two. Her first muses were folk and jazz, two sounds she found in perfect harmony upon discovering the music of Joni Mitchell. The budding songstress took the stage with her mother at the age of six and had her own band and two recordings under her belt by the time she was in high school. She continued to develop her sepia-toned piano pop throughout her teens, eventually moving to Los Angeles in 2003, where she met Grammy-winning producer -- and future co-writer and producer -- Jon Ingoldsby. Her debut album for Machine Shop Records, Like Blood Like Honey, was released in 2006 under the name Holly Brook (a shortening of her full name, Holly Brook Hafermann). Tours opening for the likes of Jamie Cullum, k.d. lang, and Duncan Sheik would follow but the album stalled, and soon Brook was without a recording contract. In 2006 her guest vocals on Fort Minors "Where'd You Go" would help push the track into the Top Five in America, and in 2009 she would join Duncan Sheiks band for his Whisper House album and its accompanying tour. The year 2010 was a huge step forward for Brook's solo career, starting with the release of the ODark:Thirty EP. A name change to Skylar Grey would soon follow, along with a meeting with Alex da Kid, who signed her to his Wonderland Music label. By the end of 2010, Eminem, along with special guest Rihanna, would have a hit with his own version of Greys Love the Way You Lie. ~ James Christopher Monger & David Jeffries, Rovi
@ Mark Visco: I totally agree, she is a very talented singer that, to me, has wasted her talent by becoming someone else. I have been listening to Holly Brook on Pandora for years and love her music. However, I don't care for Skylar Grey at at all!
Wait, she goes by the name Skylar Grey now? Without taking the two seconds to check online, I am assuming she is the "singer" that came out for the Web Redemption on the live episode of 'Tosh.0' last year. If this is the case, I am sad to see such a talented singer has traded in her persona to join the s**t-filled Rap music scene. I realize she didn't actually sing during her bit on the episode for that piece of crap "song," but she certainly didn't make any impressions on me from that abortion.
I am in love with this woman's voice. XD Can't wait until she starts releasing solo stuff as Skylar Grey. Her parts are usually the best parts of the songs she's featured in.
RIP Holly Brook. her new stuff wiill probably be all pop as skylar grey

Awesome voice! I just read about her on Hollywood reporter.com. It would seem that she has been busy songwriting as well for Diddy Dirty Money, and Lupe Fiasco. If you google Skylar Grey (her stage name), there's alot more info!
I remember this little gal at the age of two. Her parents and I attended the same church back when our kids were toddlers...back when we all lived in Mazomanie. Glad she's getting to live her dream!
I went to high school with this girl and had no idea she had done so well until she come up on Pandora. I'm so proud of her! What a strong and beautiful voice!

oh and it should be mentioned that her work with Duncan Sheik is incredible! This past winter Holly performed in one of Duncans theater performances in San Diego to rave reviews from the critcs and audiences...I believe we will be hearing Holly Brooks for a long time to come.

wow...Holly is from Bandon by the Sea and at our little shop (C'est Vert) we carry her music because she is a local girl. Imagine how thrilled we are to see that she is included in Pandoras lineup. She is an incredible woman who produces beautiful music...her mom, Candace, plays harp and guitar and on any given day of the week in the summerimte Candace can be seen performing on the streets of Old town Bandon...when Holly is in town she performs in some of the lcoal restaurants...truly a gift for
