When a band takes its name from one of the metaphysical British poet William Blake's most allegorical and impenetrable poems, it clearly isn't taking the easy route to fame and fortune. In keeping with their titular inspiration, the Human Abstract favor a brainy, progressive take on contemporary metal and hardcore that looks beyond the usual cars-and-girls themes. Guitarist Dean Herrera and guitarist and keyboardist A.J. Minette formed the Human Abstract in 2004, adding bassist Kenny Arehart, drummer Brett Powell, and, finally, singer Nathan Ells. Inspired by progressive rockers like Rush and Dream Theater along with heavier contemporary acts like Between the Buried and Me and Minette's university music theory training, the Human Abstract recorded a demo and played a number of regional gigs before signing with the local indie Hopeless Records in 2005. Working with producers Eric Rachel and Jamie King, longtime veterans of the Southern California post-hardcore scene, the Human Abstract released their debut album, Nocturne in August 2006. A year later, Minette parted ways with the band due to creative differences. The Human Abstract's sophomore album, Midheaven, followed in 2008 and featured new guitarist Andrew Tapley. Further personnel changes found Ellis replaced by new lead singer Travis Richter in 2009. In 2010 it was announced that Minette had returned to the fold. In 2011 the Human Abstract returned with their third studio album, Digital Veil. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi
Truth and Truth, Their everest was Nocturne. Digital Veil was a close second. If I had to compare Midheaven to anything I compare it to The Crusade by Trivium
MIDHAVEN was THE WORST dissappointment in 2008 for new music. Midhaven was so bad i threw it out my window when driving my car because I was so pissed about how much it completley blew. I was expecting Nocturne ++++. Nocturne showed promise, Midhaven was lazy and misdirected and unorganized s**t.

Yeah wtf, how can you say that DV was disappointing? Richter put quite a bit of feeling into his vocals and the rest of the band followed accordingly. He's also better live.
Truth Of fact: Nocturne and Midheaven are their best work. I was highly disappointed by Digital Veil. I am familiar with Richter, Ad his vocals just aren't as good or Fitting as Ell's. Nathan's voice is one of the reasons I fell in love with The human abstract.
Maybe it'll take some more listens to get to really like it, but Digital Veil sounds a hell of a lot more like mundane, generic metalcore stuff than anything else. It's a lot like what a lot of people are making these days and isn't nearly as unique and diverse as the previous two. I'm excited to hear what their NEW new singer will bring to the party and quite glad Richter is gone.
I think the new singer and "Digital Veil" is very mature and a great change for them.

AJ IS BACK AND THE BIO DOESN'T SAY SO...LATE ARE WE? AND IM SO GLAD MIDHEAVEN DID NOT DEFINE THE BAND...WASN'T A FAN...BUT DIGITAL VEIL IS STR8 MURDER! LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT, HALF WAY OBSESSED BETWEEN THAT CD AND DAUGHTER'S SELF-TITLED
Nocturne was an amazing album. hope their new one is a big step up from midheaven which was just lackluster and lacked what made these guys amazing, crazy medieval feel guitar rifts.
I absolutely loved Nocturne but never gave Midheaven a listen. I heard it was a pretty noticeable change, but i suppose it's different for different people. I'll pick up the new album when it drops, I hope it's just as lovable as Nocturne...
they are good but ive moved onto death metal. did you guys hear aj minette is going to help with the newest installment? for those who didnt know he's responsible for nocturne; their best album imo. midheaven was decent, but i loved their neo-classical sound.
cars and girls? don't know any true metal or hardcore bands that represent that. I'm thoroughly enjoying this band however very melodic! new one for the list.
i love this band and i agree hopefully the new singer can incorporate his own style and still keep it awesome. crossing the rubicon is still my fave from them.
This band is my current obsession. Not only do I love their neo-classical vibe, but their lyrics astound me. We'll see what the line-up change does to their sound. I hope not much.

underrated. they're probably better than your band.
Agree with all the comments about the reviewer CLEARLY not understanding typical metal themes. Did anyone else get the urge to pick up a book of Blake's works after reading the review, though?
What the f**k modern metal band talks about cars and girls? Did T-Pain drop an autotune hardcore album that I'm not aware of? Anyway, haven't heard The Human Abstract before. They seem cool, but probably a touch mathy for me.
Man, I'm not trying to step on toes right now, but really, what happened to the promise that Nocturne gave me? Midheaven was such a dissapointme n t , especially since I've moved on to heavier and more agressive metal, yet I always popped in Nocturne every now and then because it was authentic, innovative, and refined. Medheaven leaves me baffled with it
